Miami Football 2013 NFL Draft Tracker and Analysis
There once was a time when the Miami Hurricanes were absolutely running things when it came to the NFL draft. If you played your college ball for this program, you were going to the next level and had an upper hand over every other rookie just because you were a Hurricane.
This isn't exactly the case with the 2013 class, as the talent is as weak as this program has seen in a mighty long time. There certainly aren't any ex-Miami players going in the first round, and everybody else on this list will have to wait a long time before hearing their name called. Simply put: This is going to be a bad year for the Miami Hurricanes NFL draft class.
Although there aren't any household names this year, there are sure to be a couple of players receiving a late look from an NFL team. There is no way Miami goes a season without having at least one player drafted in the NFL.
With the draft quickly approaching, here is your complete Miami 2013 NFL draft preview.
Note: This slideshow will be updated as each Hurricane is selected throughout the NFL draft.
Brandon McGee, CB
1 of 5Where He Was Selected: Fifth Round - 149th Overall to the St. Louis Rams
St. Louis has done a terrific job of stock piling on offense, but made a defensive pick by taking Brandon McGee. Needing help in the secondary, particularly the safety spots, not sure where McGee fits, but he does have a little bit of upside to his game. Tough in man coverage, McGee provides depth at corner and could be an impact return man if needed.
Height: 5'11"
Weight: 193 pounds
If there is any Miami Hurricane that has a chance to get drafted this season, it would be cornerback Brandon McGee. In man-to-man coverage, McGee has the ability to make life difficult for receivers, as he does a good job of using his hands and has quick feet to shadow the receiver's movement.
He was often criticized for getting beat deep, but his 4.40 40-yard dash time at the NFL combine shows that he does have enough speed to prevent those vertical passes.
Mike James, RB
2 of 5Where He Was Selected: Sixth Round - 189th Overall to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers
Tampa Bay needed to add a physical runner to the mix now that LeGarrette Blount was traded to the New England Patriots. That is what Mike James is for, as he can pick up those tough yards and help move the chains for the Buccaneers. With tons of running backs being drafted before him, James was likely one of the more talented runners left on the board, which makes this a solid value pick.
Height: 5'10"
Weight: 223 pounds
Mike James could have a bright future at the next level as a third-down or goal-line running back. With his big frame and powerful lower body, James rarely goes down on initial contact and always keeps his legs turning as he fights for those extra yards. He also is one of the better blockers in this running back class, which is an undervalued trait that all running backs should have.
James doesn't have much athleticism and isn't a flashy runner, but he does do the small things right that could help a football team.
Ray Ray Armstrong, S
3 of 5Where He Was Selected: Undrafted Free Agent
Height: 6'3"
Weight: 216 pounds
If we are talking about tools to play the game of football, Ray Ray Armstrong has a lot of them. Size, aggressiveness and athletic ability all make him an interesting possibility for an NFL team. In fact, he has so much raw potential that a team could reach for him at some point late in the draft.
The problem is that Armstrong had a lot of off-the-field issues in his time spent with Miami, which includes him getting dismissed from the team last year. Red flags are never a good thing to have when entering the draft.
When you watch Armstrong you see potential, but that only goes so far when that same player can be a distraction to your team.
Matt Miller didn't list the former safety on his NFL big board.
Vaughn Telemaque, S
4 of 5Where He Was Selected: Undrafted Free Agent
Height: 6'1"
Weight: 200 pounds
There is a good chance Vaughn Telemaque won't hear his name called on draft day, but there will be a team out there that will extend an invite once everything is said and done. The former Miami safety is a physical player that is terrific in run support and reacts quickly due to his above-average instincts out there on the field.
Telemaque isn't great in pass coverage and can struggle to find the football, but his physicality and ability to play close to the line makes him worth a look as an undrafted free agent.
As expected, Matt Miller does not have Telemaque on his NFL draft big board.
Ramon Buchanan, LB
5 of 5Where He Was Selected: Undrafted Free Agent
Height: 6'2"
Weight: 215 pounds
Another player who probably won't get drafted is Ramon Buchanan. But much like Vaughn Telemaque, he is sure to receive an invite to camp for a shot to make an NFL roster. Buchanan has a small build for the linebacker position but is a wonderful athlete that covers a ton of ground and can be effective in blitz packages. He could also be a valuable addition on special teams, as he is a fairly decent tackler in the open field.
Buchanan did tear his ACL during the 2011 season and his size isn't going to do him any favors but thanks to overall athleticism, Buchanan should be given a shot at the next level.
It would be a complete shock if Buchanan is drafted, which is why he wasn't included on Matt Miller's big board.
