The Clippers have confirmed Sterling's death via a spokesperson, according to CNN:

"

Scott Sterling, 32, was reported dead at 12:42 a.m. PT on Wednesday, according to the Los Angeles County Coroner's office. Sheriff's officers and the coroner's office believe he died of an "apparent drug overdose," according to a press release.

"

Once again, our hearts go out to the Sterling family and Clippers organization during this difficult time.

---End of Update---

The younger Sterling was 32 years old at the time of his death, which was confirmed by the coroners on Wednesday. According to the Los Angeles Times, Sterling had not been seen for a couple of days and was alone when found by officers on the scene.

Outside of his relationship with his father, Sterling is perhaps best known for the events surrounding a controversial shooting of a childhood friend, Philip Scheid, in 1999. Per the Los Angeles Times, Scott shot his former friend after an argument escalated, though charges were never filed against the younger Sterling.

During that time, criticism also compiled on Scott's father, Donald, who has owned the Clippers since 1981. As one of the NBA's longest-tenured owners, the elder Sterling has made the Clippers a financial success by moving the team to Los Angeles (from San Diego) and being notoriously frugal with his money.

It is not known whether Donald will stay with the team during this time or take a leave of absence. Nevertheless, our thoughts are with the Sterling family as they deal with this unfortunate tragedy.
