What's the Better Tournament?: T20 Championship Or IPL?

Dann KhanMar 16, 2009

In the last two years or so two big T20 tournaments have taken place: The T20 World Cup and the Indian Premier League.

Both had all the excitement one could hope for and gathered a huge fanbase.

The World Cup was the first ever T20 international tournament held. It kicked off with a brilliant Chris Gayle hundred and ended with a thrilling finale. During the tournament fans saw a good number of thrilling moments.

And of course to top it all up, the underdogs India won, and I personally being an Indian, enjoyed the win more as it was the first time I saw India win a World Cup.

The tournament did not have big scores. These matches had pitches which helped the bowlers as well, and that's what made those medium level scores tough to chase.

The atmosphere during the tournament was something worth seeing as well. So overall the tourney was a huge success.

The IPL also had an electrifying atmosphere. People from all over India got mad about domestic cricket for the first time and just loved their heroes during the tournament.

But unlike the World Cup, this tournament had huge scores and bib centuries from individuals throughout the one and a half months.

The pitches were dead flat and the boundaries were brought in to such an extent that many miscues went all the way.

Personally I liked both the tournaments and enjoyed the fun thoroughly.

Thus, I believe the T20 World Cup was the better tournament. It did not interfere with the international calendar too much like the IPL and got over in two weeks and not in two months.

T20 threatens test cricket a bit and the lesser it is played, the better it seems to be.

The contest between bat and ball was a lot fairer and despite the low scores, the matches were enjoyable as they were not one-sided affairs.

But on the other hand the IPL did something great to Indian cricket. For the first time, talent got a bigger and better stage to perform at. The local boys also benefited as they got a chance to play with the international stars.

Money was also a big factor that now provides an incentive players from poof families to play cricket and not worry about their finances too much if they cannot play international cricket.

IPL has also taken Indian cricket miles ahead in regards to quality.

Summing up, the T20 is something that provided quality cricket with a fairly even battle between bat and ball, which is something I would love to watch.

The Indian Premier League is pretty unfair to the bowlers but is improving cricket quality in India and also providing youngsters an opportunity on a platform where the whole world can watch them play.
