NFL Week 2 Injury Report: Who's Hurting the Most After Week 1?

Zach KruseJun 7, 2018

As is the case for most weeks in an NFL season, Week 1 of 2012 gave us a number of important injuries to keep our eyes on as we transition into the season's second week.

Some are just dings, while others are more serious. Here's a look at some of the biggest injuries coming out of the first week of the 2012 season.

Jeremy Maclin, Eagles

According to Eagles coach Andy Reid (via Geoff Mosher of CSN), Maclin remains "sore" from a hip flexor he suffered Sunday against the Cleveland Browns.

The plot somewhat thickened when the Eagles signed Mardy Gilyard to a deal Tuesday afternoon. It's possible the signing happened because Maclin's injury may in fact keep him out of Week 2 or longer.

Maclin is far from being ruled out for Sunday, but keep an eye at his practice status as the week continues on.

John Skelton, Cardinals

An ankle injury is likely to keep Skelton out two to four weeks, according to Pro Football Talk. X-rays were negative, and it is not of the dreaded high-ankle variety, but Skelton will lose his starting job for at least most of September.

That means Kevin Kolb, who led the Cardinals back against the Seattle Seahawks Sunday, will be the team's starter in Week 2. If he's solid in Skelton's absence, it may be difficult for Kolb to lose the starting job upon Skelton's return.

Dwight Freeney, Colts

Freeney left Sunday's loss to the Chicago Bears with an ankle injury, and the Colts have been very vague about the seriousness of the issue so far this week. According to Phillip Wilson of the Indianapolis Star, Colts coach Chuck Pagano said he expected Freeney back "sooner as opposed to later."

Check back on Freeney's practice participation this week, including on Friday, the most important day. If he's a no-show Friday, expect him to miss Week 2.

Greg Jennings, Packers

Two days before the Packers take on the Bears in an important Week 2 matchup, Jennings' status remains up in the air.

Jennings left late Sunday with an apparent groin injury, and he would have missed Packers practice Monday had it taken place. Having a short week certainly doesn't help his chances of playing Thursday.

UPDATE: Jennings was reportedly out of practice Tuesday, further jeopardizing his status for Thursday night.

If I were a betting man, I'd say Jennings misses Thursday. He just don't have enough time to get healed and onto the practice field before Week 2 begins.

Brent Grimes, Falcons

Quite possibly no team received worse news on the injury front following Week 1 than the Falcons.

According to Jay Adams of the Falcons' official web site, coach Mike Smith said Monday that Atlanta would be placing Grimes on injured reserve with an Achilles injury. While Grimes left Sunday with a "calf" injury, it's likely a ruptured tendon in his heel.

The Falcons still have Dunta Robinson and Asante Samuel, but Grimes was arguably their best cover corner. Losing him for the season is a huge blow.

Rodger Saffold, Rams

A scary injury out of St. Louis, as Saffold banged heads with one of his own teammates and crumpled to the turf. He was carted off and didn't return, spending the night in a Detroit-area hospital as a precaution.

Barring some minor medical miracle, expect the Rams to be without Saffold for Week 2 and in the foreseeable future.

Scott Wells, Rams

As if the Rams didn't already have enough issues on the offensive line, St. Louis announced Monday that center Scott Wells would be placed on injured reserve with a fractured foot. He is eligible to come off IR as the designated player down the road.

Wells has been banged up throughout his brief time in St. Louis, including missing most of camp with with a knee issue. He signed a $24 million deal with the Rams this offseason after spending his entire career in Green Bay.

Pierre Garcon, Redskins

Garcon left the Redskins' 40-32 win over the New Orleans Saints Sunday after catching his 88-yard touchdown from Robert Griffin III, but he remains confident he'll play in Washington's Week 2 contest against the Rams.

According to the Washington Post, X-rays came back negative on Garcon's foot, but he was too sore to return to the field.

Even if Garcon is able to come back this week, the injury is something to keep an eye on moving forward. Foot injuries tend to linger for receivers.

Jake Locker, Titans

Locker dislocated his left shoulder Sunday while trying to make a tackle on a fumble return. The Titans, however, expect Locker to play in Week 2.

According to Jim Wyatt of The Tennessean, Titans coach Mike Munchak expects Locker to start in Week 2 against the San Diego Chargers. That's good news for Locker, who needs to be on the field and learning on the job.

Backup Matt Hasselbeck is available if Locker can't go.

Fred Jackson, Bills

Interesting news out of Buffalo, where Jason La Canfora of CBS Sports reports that Jackson's MRI did not provide an exact timetable for his return. He will be monitored over the next seven to 10 days, but that week or so will be a nervous time for the Bills staff.

C.J. Spiller played well in Jackson's absence, but we're talking about one of the game's more complete all-around backs. Expecting him to miss two to four weeks with a knee injury might be optimistic.

Darrelle Revis, Jets

Revis left the Jets' win over Buffalo Sunday after getting kicked in the head, and the Jets are now calling his injury a "mild concussion," according to ESPN's Adam Schefter (via NFL.com).

Revis will undergo the standard concussion protocol before the Jets can clear him for Sunday's matchup with the Pittsburgh Steelers. New York is optimistic, but concussions are impossible to get a good reading on.
