Fantasy Football Picks 2012: Players Still Available to Pick Up Before Sunday

Rob GoldbergSep 6, 2012

Just because your fantasy football draft is over, it does not mean your entire team is set.

Take a look at Kevin Ogletree, who was owned in less than one percent of leagues before his game against the New York Giants. He responded by catching eight passes for 114 yards and two touchdowns. By next week he will be started in half of the leagues across the country.

It is hard to guarantee that type of production from a relatively unknown player, but there are still a number of players available in most leagues that are worth picking up before it is too late. You certainly would rather a surprise player be on your roster than in the waiver pool.

These players are available in at least 65 percent of leagues according to ESPN, and they might surprise you as early as Week 1.

Coby Fleener, TE, Indianapolis Colts (Owned in 31.6 percent of leagues)

Outside of Reggie Wayne, Andrew Luck does not have much to throw to this season. Fortunately, the Colts drafted Stanford teammate Coby Fleener in the second round.

Fleener was one of Luck's favorite targets throughout his collegiate career as they paired for 17 touchdowns in the last two seasons. Defenses will be tougher at this level, but they still have a chemistry that most rookies do not.

In addition, the Indianapolis offensive line should be one of the weakest in the league this season. When Luck comes under pressure, the tight end will become a safety net and will rack up the targets throughout the season.

Jon Baldwin, WR, Kansas City Chiefs (Owned in 27.2 percent of leagues)

Last year's first round pick did not put up great numbers, but it was difficult for quarterbacks to spread the ball around once Matt Cassel went down. The good news is that Baldwin has all of the tools you look for in an elite receiver. He has great size at 6'4" and has the hands to do this.

He is still a raw prospect, and did not get the start over Steve Breaston in Week 1. However, he is exactly the type of player that "comes out of nowhere" to have a huge game and turn that into a huge season.

It will not be long until he takes over the starting job and starts taking away targets from Dwayne Bowe.

Evan Royster, RB, Washington Redskins (Owned in 21.5 percent of leagues)

It is amazing that a running back that is listed first on the team's depth chart is only owned in one out of every five leagues.

It is unknown how much playing time Evan Royster will get if he does end up getting the start, but one thing is certain: the kid can play. The Penn State product averaged 5.9 yards per carry in his first year in the NFL after totaling almost 4,000 yards in his collegiate career. In the team's last two games, Royster had 245 rushing yards and added another 59 through the air.

Head coach Mike Shanahan's history of shuffling backs at the last minute should prevent you from starting the second-year player right away, but do not be surprised if he does become the featured back for Washington.

Robert Turbin, RB, Seattle Seahawks (Owned in 14.2 percent of leagues)

Last year, Marshawn Lynch was one of the top fantasy running backs in the NFL. This was partly due to the fact that Seattle simply had no one else to give the ball to.

Lynch was fourth in the NFL with 285 rushing attempts. Leon Washington was second on the team with 53. This season, they have a capable backup in fourth-round pick Robert Turbin out of Utah State. He not only has impressive agility for his size, but he might be the only running back stronger than the man ahead of him on the depth chart.

In addition, Lynch has been listed as day-to-day on the injury report due to a sore back. If he is limited, Turbin will have a big chance to shine against a Cardinals team that gave up the seventh-most rushing touchdowns last season.

This is not a one-week pickup, either. Robert Turbin has the skill to be in the mix all season long.
