5 Potential September Call-Ups About to Take MLB by Storm

Mark MillerJun 7, 2018

The annual decision on whether or not to call up top prospects when September rolls around can be a taxing one on MLB general managers.

Organizations need to see what they have in their top talent, and while there may be less pressure on the player when the rosters expand to 40 vs. the 25 during the regular season, making a major league debut is always an unnerving experience.

Here are a few top prospects that should be able to thrive when they do get the call, and if all goes as planned, will never look back.

Chris Archer, RHP, Tampa Bay Rays

1 of 5

At just 23 years old, you could definitely make the argument that Chris Archer's development may not be behind schedule and that he'll be making waves in the majors in no time.

But with this being his seventh season in the Tampa Bay Rays' system, the time may be now. In most other rotations he'd be good enough to start, and with a 3.76 ERA in 24 starts at Triple-A Durham, he's been steady enough to warrant a close look.

Gerrit Cole, RHP, Pittsburgh Pirates

2 of 5

The Pittsburgh Pirates have been excited about the makings of Gerrit Cole ever since he was handed an $8 million signing bonus last year.

He has a fastball that can reach the high-90s, and has climbed his way from Single-A to Triple-A just this year.

While his ERA has headed northward since moving to the highest level, he's still shown enough to let Pirates fans know he'll be in the mix for years to come.

Jurickson Profar, SS, Texas Rangers

3 of 5

As the top minor league prospect in baseball, there's definitely plenty of hype surrounding Jurickson Profar's leap to the bigs.

He's shown all the tools that a team would hope for in an infielder, and with speed on the basepaths (26 SB in 2011, 16 in 2012) he'll be able to make an impact as a pinch runner even if he's not given regular action during the postseason race.

Oswaldo Arcia, OF, Minnesota Twins

4 of 5

The Minnesota Twins have a reputation for taking plenty of time when it comes to developing prospects, so it might be out of the question to see Oswaldo Arcia this September.

At the same time, the team needs to do something to put fans in the seats over the final month, and placing Arcia, who is batting .325 with 63 RBI in 67 games with Double-A New Britan, might just do the trick.

Wil Myers, OF, Kansas City Royals

5 of 5

Once a top catching prospect, Wil Myers has the makings of an outfielder that should have a bright future with the Kansas City Royals as soon as he works his way in at the major league level.

He's put in time in both Double-A and Triple-A this season and has thrived at both levels, batting .343 and .301 respectively.

With 24 home runs in 94 games as a Omaha Storm Chaser, Myers' power potential appears to be reaching the surface.
