NBA News and Notes: 5 Most Ridiculous News Items on the Web

Bradlee RossJun 7, 2018

The Internet is a source of endless—and sometimes ridiculous—NBA news items.

Now that we're beyond the height of free agency, the "Dwightmare" has finally ended and we're gearing up for training camp, we're officially in a period where all sorts of silly headlines make their way through the social-media sphere.

This slideshow is dedicated to those bits of information that we love to laugh at.

5. Dallas GM Donnie Nelson Excited About New Players

1 of 5

Most people would think that the Dallas Mavericks, after striking out on Deron Williams and Dwight Howard, would not be super excited about how their team is comprised right now. Apparently that is not the case.

According to Earl K. Sneed of NBA.com, Dallas GM Donnie Nelson stated that everyone was excited about the “new” team they had and that he “couldn’t contain his giddiness.”

Why This Is Ridiculous

I get how it can be exciting to have new faces on a team. Sometimes, getting fresh players and perspectives can be great.

But this team won an NBA title two seasons ago, and rather than keeping that team together, Nelson and Mark Cuban decided they could build a better one. So, they got rid of everyone and then struck out on Deron Williams and Dwight Howard.

Howard and Chris Paul may be available next offseason, but why would either of them choose Dallas over staying where they are? There is no way the Mavs are as happy about the way things turned out as they claim to be.

No way.

4. Anthony Davis Wants to Win DPOY

2 of 5

Anthony Davis' rookie season in the NBA is one of the most anticipated in a long time. He is expected to be a great defensive player eventually, but it sounds like he is expecting it to happen a lot sooner than later.

In an interview with Joe Brescia of The New York Times, Davis stated that his goals for his rookie year were to be named to both the All-Rookie Team and the All-Defensive First Team—and to win Defensive Player of the Year.

He also stated that the NBA player to whom he compares himself is Kevin Garnett.

Why This Is Ridiculous

I love Anthony Davis and I am, just like every other die-hard NBA fan, really looking forward to seeing what he can do at the next level.

However, I have to call him out on this. It is ridiculous to think that a rookie could achieve those honors, especially Defensive Player of the Year.

There is no way this will happen, especially now that Dwight Howard has a chance to be an even bigger defensive monster with the Lakers.

3. Steve Nash Will 'Quarterback' the Offense

3 of 5

Steve Nash has always quarterbacked his offenses, but now he plays with Kobe Bryant. That role will be over for him, right?

According to the Brian Kamenetzky of ESPN Los Angeles, Lakers head coach Mike Brown stated that Steve Nash would “quarterback the offense.” Brown stated that, while Nash’s role would be different, he would still have the opportunity to really run the show.

Why This Is Ridiculous

Kobe Bryant runs the Lakers' offense. Period. There is no way that Bryant will just fall in line and allow Nash to take control when we all know that he believes he should be shooting the ball.

Though they may all try to convince us otherwise, this change how the Lakers attack on the offensive end will not happen.

2. Sacramento Kings to Move to Virginia Beach

4 of 5

The Sacramento Kings have had to suffer through relocation rumors for some time now. The time when those rumors will cease does not look to be in the near future.

According to The Hampton Roads Business Journal, the Kings are considering a move from Sacramento all the way across the country to Virginia Beach. A deal to keep the Kings where they are fell apart three months ago, which is a big reason why we are hearing this chatter right now.

Why This Is Ridiculous

This is obviously a PR move by the Kings designed to aid them in their negotiations with the City of Sacramento and other potential destinations.

It makes perfect sense—when you are trying to negotiate a business deal—to make it known that you have other potential suitors. Plus, if you are going to move a team, why on earth would you move it all the way across the country from your principal fanbase?

You have Seattle up there, just waiting to again prove itself as an NBA city. It does not make sense.

1. LeBron James Wants to Do Space Jam 2

5 of 5

The motion picture Space Jam has become a cult hit among NBA and Looney Tunes fans alike. Apparently, that extends to NBA players, per this LeBron James tweet:

"

RT @parletoo: @kingjames do you love space Jam ? (I love that movie. Wish I could do Space Jam 2!)

"
"— LeBron James (@KingJames) August 26, 2012"

That’s right, James wants to do a sequel to Space Jam.

Why This Is Ridiculous

This rumor is ridiculous because people will actually take it seriously. There are really fans out there who will believe that James is in talks to do this movie. It is not happening.

He has neither the time nor the need to do it. Plus, it would probably be a terrible movie.
