This suspension comes less than one week after San Francisco Giants outfielder Melky Cabrera was put down for 50 games due to a positive test for testosterone.
The A's have put together one of the most surprising seasons in all of baseball, going 29-14 since the start of July to pull within a half game of Baltimore for the second wild-card spot in the American League.
Colon has been just as big a surprise. He has a 10-9 record with 152.1 innings pitched, 161 hits allowed, 91 strikeouts and 23 walks.
At 39 years old, Colon has been bouncing around the league since his last year with the Angels in 2007. He pitched for Boston in 2008, the White Sox in 2009, was out of baseball in 2010 due to arm injuries and pitched for the Yankees in 2011.
The A's signed him to fill out their rotation as they entered what was expected to be a rebuilding season.
On a positive note, the A's did get Brett Anderson back from Tommy John surgery on Tuesday, so the loss of Colon will be easier for them to manage.
