Breaking Down Potential Maurice Jones-Drew Trade Scenarios

Chris TrapassoJun 2, 2018

Maurice Jones-Drew may be traded. Maybe he'll be a Jaguar for life. Right now, no one's quite sure.

First, MJD's agent, Adisa Bakari, said the running back was open to a trade, according to ESPN.com. Now, NFL.com is reporting he's ready to make amends with the Jacksonville organization.

Jones-Drew led the NFL with 1,606 rushing yards in 2011, so his value is at its pinnacle.

While there's a good chance he'll come to terms with the Jaguars, we certainly cannot rule out a trade at this point in time.

With that, let's examine potential trade scenarios for MJD.

New England Patriots

1 of 3

There's no telling what the New England Patriots might do. With mastermind Bill Belichick at the helm, there's always a chance the team will tinker with its roster.

Sure, Jeff Demps was recently signed to add a potentially dynamic dimension to the return game, and he'll likely be utilized as a gadget player within the offense.

But the Olympian is clearly more of a novelty than anything else.

The Patriots will undoubtedly rely heavily on their passing game—with Tom Brady, a smart idea, right?—but they've run the ball more frequently than people think.

Last year, they finished with the 17th-most rushing attempts. In 2010, only nine teams ran the ball more often.

However, Stevan Ridley and Shane Vereen are far from experienced and are certainly unproven. Right now, New England seemingly has enough weapons to field a premier offense, but wouldn't MJD make it unstoppable?

For the first time in a while, it doesn't have slew of future draft picks to deal, but it could undoubtedly fairly compensate the Jaguars for their star runner.

Sending a second-rounder and multiple mid- to-late round selections for Jones-Drew seems reasonable.

San Diego Chargers

San Diego Chargers running back Ryan Mathews has potential.

But having potential simply means he hasn't done anything yet.

Well, actually, Mathews did eclipse the 1,000-yard mark on the ground in 2011, but he cannot shake the injury bug.

The broken clavicle he suffered on his first carry of the preseason should keep him out for the start of the regular season. He hasn't completed a full season without injury since his freshman season at Fresno State in 2007.

If he isn't 100 percent when he returns or is re-injured, Ronnie Brown and Jackie Battle are next in line.

With head coach Norv Turner entering a do-or-die season and Philip Rivers turning 31 in December, now could potentially be the appropriate time for the Chargers to make a bold decision that may only positively affect the team in the short-term.

Jones-Drew would make San Diego one of the more balanced offensive clubs in the AFC and would alleviate pressure from Rivers under center.

New York Jets

When Jones-Drew's agent made the statement his client was open to a trade, the Jets instantly came to mind as a potential trade suitor.

Rex Ryan wants to return to a ground-and-pound offense, but Shonn Greene has proven to be less than effective the past two seasons.

After a disastrous start to the preseason, the Jets clearly could use more firepower on offense. Swinging a trade for MJD is far from out of the question for an organization looking to stay in the headlines.

They don't have any additional picks in upcoming drafts, but undoubtedly in win-now mode, Gang Green could part with future draft choices to land one of the best rushers in football, a guy that'd suit the type of offense they're attempting to operate in 2012.
