Maurice Jones Drew Trade Rumors: Teams That Would Best Suit Disgruntled RB

Patrick ClarkeJun 7, 2018

Jacksonville Jaguars running back Maurice Jones-Drew would be best suited to bring championship potential to only a handful of teams in 2012.

The NFL's leading rusher last season is unhappy in Jacksonville, and is open to being traded this summer, according to ESPN's Adam Schefter (via Twitter):

"

In light of Jaguars owner Shad Khan's recent public remarks, Jacksonville's RB Maurice Jones-Drew is now open to being traded, per source.

With reports running ramped that Jones-Drew wants nothing to do with the future of the Jaguars franchise, we break down a trio of teams that would best suit the star running back this season.

Detroit Lions

The Detroit Lions ranked 29th in the league last season in rushing yards per game, averaging just over 95 yards on the ground per week. As a result, no running back on Detroit's current roster rushed for more than 390 yards in 2011. The lack of a dominant force in the Lions backfield will no doubt take a toll on their passing attack.

Teams don't have to respect the run and can therefore focus their attention on the Lions' vertical passing game. On the other hand, acquiring Jones-Drew would make Detroit the most feared offense in all of football. Matthew Stafford and Calvin Johnson are already a nightmarish duo for opposing defenses to deal with, but having MJD in the backfield would make the Lions nearly impossible to defend.

Rex Ryan's New York Jets desperately need a boost to their offense if they are to have any hope of contending in the AFC this coming season. The Jets ranked 22nd in rushing offense last season, while ranking 21st in passing offense. Acquiring a talent like Maurice Jones-Drew would not only boost New York's running game, but also free up the field for Mark Sanchez in the passing game.

Jones-Drew could also team up with Tim Tebow to create a vicious Wildcat offensive package that would separate the Jets offense from any other in the NFL. The fact that the Jets are one of the league's top defensive teams also makes New York a great fit for MJD. With a dependable option in the back field and a solid defense, the Jets could get back to their winning formula of pounding the ball and playing defense in 2012.

If the Maurice Jones-Drew wants to be traded to the Big Apple, but the Jaguars want him out of the AFC, the New York Giants would be the perfect fit. New York ranked dead last in rushing offense in 2011, and didn't see a single running back average at least four yards per carry. That would certainly change if MJD joined the Giants' backfield in 2012.

The reigning Super Bowl champions already boast one of the NFL's most dominant aerial assaults, and acquiring a playmaking back in MJD would only solidify them as the NFC East favorites this season. Of all the teams that best suit the star running back, the New York Giants give Jones-Drew the best opportunity to win a championship immediately.
