Team USA Basketball 2012: Kobe Bryant Must Take Secondary Role to LeBron James
Kobe Bryant must defer to LeBron James when Team USA takes on the world this summer in London for the 2012 Olympic Games.
After all, James is the best player on Team USA's roster—not Kobe Bryant.
James is also morphing into a legitimate alpha male right in front of our eyes, as we witnessed in the 2012 NBA playoffs. He commands the respect of his teammates not only in action, but also in words.
When James speaks, his teammates listen. When someone steps out of line, James responds with authority and fervor.
Don't get me wrong—Bryant isn't ready to set out to pasture just yet.
He still has a significant role to play for Team USA both on and off the court. But, when it comes down to which player is in control of the huddle, in control of the game's tempo and in control of setting the tone for Team USA, it has to be James at the helm.
Bryant's role on this team needs to be one of team mentor. He needs to listen to what's going on with the younger players and offer support and encouragement rather than laying down the law. His experience in both international competitions and in life make him a perfect person for this role.
On the court, Bryant needs to let the game come to him. If he starts hogging the ball, USA is doomed.
James needs to be option No. 1 on the court. He's not only a better scorer at this point in his career, but he's an unselfish contributor who sees the court as well as anyone since Magic Johnson. He needs to be the one to have the ball in his hands when the game is on the line—not Bryant.
It's time for Bryant to pass the torch to James. That's the bottom line.
