2012 MLB Draft Signing Bonus: Contract Details of the Top Prospects

Alex KayJun 7, 2018

Friday evening, 5 p.m. ET to be specific, is the deadline by which the MLB CBA dictates draft picks must be signed.

With that deadline looming just a few hours from now, there is no better time to check out how the top prospects in the draft made out, pay-wise, with their new franchise.

Let’s take a look at the contract details and signing bonuses of the top three players in the draft.

Boston Red Sox v Minnesota Twins

No. 1 Carlos Correa: $4.8 million bonus

The Houston Astros got an absolute steal when signing their 17-year-old shortstop prospect.

According to the Associated Press (h/t ESPN), the $4.8 million bonus is far below the recommended slot value of $7.2 million and is the lowest since the KC Royals doled out just $3.5 million for Luke Hochevar.

Correa said he’s just happy to be playing ball and is glad he was able to get a deal done quickly.

Hopefully, for the sake of the ‘Stros, Correa’s career turns out better than Hochevar’s has.

No. 2 Byron Buxton: $6 million bonus

The 18-year-old outfielder from Georgia cashed in with the Minnesota Twins.

His bonus is by far the biggest in the class, surpassing No. 1 pick Correa by $1.2 million.

The Twins are truly hoping this young man pans out and makes a big impact on the franchise sooner rather than later.

No. 3 Mike Zunino: $4 million bonus

The Seattle Mariners inked this Florida Gator to an extremely reasonable contract.

$4 million for a 22-year-old catcher that was selected third overall is a just value and over a million dollars cheaper than the suggested slot value.

If he’s able to come in and contribute within the next few years, the deal is an absolute bargain.
