2012 NBA Draft: The Top 20 Undrafted Players Still Available

Paul GrossingerJun 7, 2018

The 2012 NBA draft is over, the picks are in, and the game of musical chairs is over—so who was left standing when the music stopped?

It was a deep draft and several top prospects, including Jeff Taylor, Doron Lamb and Tyshawn Taylor, slipped to the second round. But, in a deep draft, there are always good players who fall even further and go undrafted.

There were many victims this year, including these 20 NBA hopefuls.

William Buford, Shooting Guard

1 of 20

Buford is a tall, athletic shooting guard who is always attacking the rim. He needs to learn to rebound better and get to the line but would be a good bench player for the right team.

And most importantly, he is a winner.

Kevin Jones, Power Forward

2 of 20

Jones is a skilled power forward who knows how to score in the paint and rebound. However, he is an average athlete who will have trouble finding a position in the NBA

Tu Holloway, Point Guard

3 of 20

Holloway is a super fast, athletic guard who has a great first step, passes well, and can penetrate to the rim. He is undersized at 6'0'' and prone to game-to-game inconsistency, including a disastrous outing in the NCAA tournament.

JaMychal Green, Forward

4 of 20

Green is a long, athletic forward who thrives on the defensive side of the ball. He is not polished offensively and relies more on pure tools than skill, but he would be a good project for an NBA team.

Alex Young, Shooting Guard

5 of 20

Alex Young flew under the radar because his team, IUPUI, was simply terrible.

He has great size for the position, gets to the rim at will with a great first step, knows how to slash to the basket, and can stroke it from deep. Young is inconsistent at times, but he is a classic sleeper.

Drew Gordon, Power Forward

6 of 20

Gordon is a skilled power forward from New Mexico who is a particularly adept rebounder. Unfortunately, there are concerns that his game is not complete enough for the NBA.

Scott Machado, Point Guard

7 of 20

Machado may be the best player to go undrafted. He is a pure point guard that boasted one of the best assist-to-turnover ratios in the NCAA last year.

He did not have any press because he went to Iona, but he should be a quality NBA backup.

Casper Ware, Point Guard

8 of 20

Similar to Tu Holloway, Ware can pass, shoot, and penetrate well, which makes him an intriguing prospect. However, he is more combo guard than point guard and lacks the size for either back-court position. That being said, he could be a great spark-plug scorer off the bench.

Ricardo Ratliffe, Power Forward

9 of 20

Ratliffe is a good rim protector who knows how to block shots and rebounds. However, he is already 23 years old and has no perimeter game at all, which limits his upside.

Jordan Taylor, Point Guard

10 of 20

Taylor is a point guard with capable passing skills who led Wisconsin on a strong NCAA tournament run. He lacks size, shoots too much, and hits his shots at a low percentage, but he would have value off the bench in the NBA.

And like William Buford, he is a winner.

John Shurna, Small Forward

11 of 20

Shurna is a long-range shooter, plain and simple. He can hit shots from anywhere on the court. Unfortunately, he lacks size, lateral quickness and penetration ability.

Josh Owens, Power Forward

12 of 20

If Owens were younger, he would be a lottery pick because he has great size, rebounding ability and athleticism. But as he was not particularly productive at Stanford and, at age 23, it's unclear if he has any upside left.

Yancy Gates, Power Forward

13 of 20

Gates is a big, physical player who can pound it in the paint and rebound against most opponents. But he has conditioning issues, rarely plays his absolute hardest and needs to improve his coachability to succeed in the NBA.

Xavier Gibson, Center

14 of 20

With athleticism and seven-foot size, Gibson can be a 4 or 5 off the bench in the NBA. However, he is raw and needs to add strength, so he is a massive project.

Jet Chang, Shooting Guard

15 of 20

Chang, a no-name player from BYU Hawaii, is an interesting NBA prospect. He has injury issues and questionable shot selection, but he has surprisingly good athleticism, shooting range and scoring instincts.

Gerardo Suero, Shooting Guard

16 of 20

Suero is a tough, athletic wing who really knows how to score in the lane. However, he rarely draws contact and needs to continue to develop to be an effective NBA player.

Ashton Gibbs, Point Guard

17 of 20

Gibbs is a tough point guard out of Pittsburgh who has put together several strong seasons and NCAA tournament runs. However, he is too shaky in many key areas including ball-handling, penetration and jump shooting.

Herb Pope, Power Forward

18 of 20

Pope is a very underrated player. He has a good interior game, can score inside and is a beast on the boards. While he is already 23 years oldand has major off-court issues, Pope is worth taking a chance on as a free agent.

Mario Delas, Power Forward

19 of 20

Delas is a smooth European forward who knows how to score the basketball. He lacks size, defense and toughness, but he will have a role on an NBA bench one day.

Renardo Sidney, Power Forward

20 of 20

Sidney, once a top-10 prospect, has been beset by off-court problems that have killed his draft stock. Still, he is a talented and skilled player, so if he straightens out, he may find a role in the NBA someday.
