Report Card for Each NBA Team's Last 5 Drafts

Jesse DorseyJun 6, 2018

The NBA draft is just over 24 hours away at this point, and it seems like there is a lot to learn still in these waning hours before the New Orleans Hornets select Anthony Davis.

We can look at mock drafts all we want, but nothing is going to tell us exactly that each player is going to be a good NBA talent, and looking further down each draft list is even more of a crapshoot. Teams can stockpile draft picks, but even that might not be as good an option as just evaluating talent better than other teams.

You can usually tell which teams are good at drafting, as they are the ones who get better and turn into playoff teams, while bad drafters get a good pick, bounce around the middle for a while and drop back to a top pick because their middle picks didn't pan out as well as they would have hoped.

So, in order to really figure out who has been a good drafter and who hasn't, let's take a look at which teams have had the best drafts of the past five years and dish out grades for each team.

Atlanta Hawks: C

1 of 30

2007: 1st Round: Al Horford and Acie Law

2008: No picks

2009: 1st Round: Jeff Teague, 2nd Round: Sergiy Gladyr

2010: 1st Round: Damion James, 2nd Round: Pape Sy

2011: 2nd Round: Keith Benson

Atlanta has done a lot to try to improve their team over the past few years, but the draft has only been intermittently good to them.

Going home with Al Horford in 2007 and Jeff Teague in 2009 were the tops in their past five years, otherwise they peaked with Damion James.

Boston Celtics: C-

2 of 30

2007: 1st Round: Jeff Green (Traded in Ray Allen trade), 2nd Round: Gabe Pruitt

2008: 1st Round: J.R. Giddens, 2nd Round: Semih Erden

2009: 2nd Round: Lester Hudson

2010: 1st Round: Avery Bradley, 2nd Round: Luke Harangody

2011: 1st Round: MarShon Brooks (Traded for JaJuan Johnson & future second rounder), 2nd Round: E'Twaun Moore

The Boston Celtics have made some good picks and some bad picks; good decisions and bad decisions.

A lot of what they did in 2007 was to trade for Ray Allen, so they get some credit for that, otherwise they hit hard with Semih Erden in the second round in 2008 and Avery Bradley in the first in 2010.

Brooklyn Nets: C+

3 of 30

2007: 1st Round: Sean Williams

2008: 1st Round: Brook Lopez, Ryan Anderson, 2nd Round: Chris Douglas-Roberts

2009: 1st Round: Terrence Williams

2010: 1st Round: Derrick Favors, Jordan Crawford (traded for Damion James), 2nd Round: Tibor Pleiss

2011: 1st Round: JaJuan Johnson (Traded for MarShon Brooks), 2nd Round: Jordan Williams

The Nets have been interesting drafters in the past five years.

New Jersey landed good picks in 2009 with Brook Lpez and Ryan Anderson, even though Anderson has dipped out of New Jersey at this point.

Otherwise, Derrick Favors helped land them Deron Williams and they made one bad trade and one good trade with Jordan Crawford for Damion James in 2010 and JaJuan Johnson for MarShon Brooks in 2011.

Charlotte Bobcats: D-

4 of 30

2007: 1st Round: Brandan Wright (Traded in Jason Richardson trade), Jared Dudley

2008: 1st Round: D.J. Augustin, Alexis Ajinca, 2nd Round: Kyle Weaver

2009: 1st Round: Gerald Henderson, 2nd Round: Derrick Brown, Robert Vaden

2010: No Picks

2011: 1st Round: Kemba Walker, Bismack Biyombo, 2nd Round: Jeremy Tyler

Woe is the Charlotte Bobcats. They've not been a great team over the past five years—making the playoffs just once and then falling apart again.

They peaked with their first-rounders in 2008, 2009 and 2011, picking D.J. Augustin, Gerald Henderson, Kemba Walker and Bismack Biyombo. Augustin and Henderson are bench players at best and Walker and Biyombo are still too young to really say.

Chicago Bulls: B+

5 of 30

2007: 1st Round: Joakim Noah, 2nd Round: Aaron Gray, JamesOn Curry

2008: 1st Round: Derrick Rose, 2nd Round: Sonny Weems (traded for picks)

2009: 1st Round: James Johnson, Taj Gibson

2010: 1st Round: Kevin Seraphin (traded for Vladimir Veremeenko)

2011: 1st Round: Jimmy Butler, 2nd Round: Malcolm Lee (traded for Nikola Mirotic)

There have been more good picks than bad for the Bulls, and the guys they've ended up with in the draft have made a huge impact on their team today.

Three of their five most important players came via the draft in Joakim Noah, Derrick Rose and Taj Gibson.

Plus, they may have drafted the guy with the latest second capital letter in his name in JamesOn Curry.

Cleveland Cavaliers: C

6 of 30

2007: No Picks

2008: 1st Round: J.J. Hickson

2009: 1st Round: Christian Eyenga, 2nd Round: Danny Green

2010: No Picks

2011: 1st Round: Kyrie Irving, Tristan Thompson, 2nd Round: Milan Macvan

Cleveland really did a number on the picks they had back when they had LeBron James and were trying to trade for guys rather than draft them.

However, they've made some decent picks with the ones they had during the LeBron era, and hit a home run with Kyrie Irving last year.

Dallas Mavericks: D

7 of 30

2007: 2nd Round: Nick Fazekas, Renaldas Seibutis, Milovan Rakovic

2008: 2nd Round: Shan Foster

2009: 1st Round: Byron Mullens (Traded for Rodrigue Beaubois), 2nd Round: Ahmad Nivins

2010: 2nd Round: Solomon Alabi sold to Toronto Raptors

2011: Picks traded for Rudy Fernandez

The Dallas Mavericks have exactly zero players on their team that were drafted within the last five seasons.

It's never a good thing when the best pick made is Byron Mullens, although they deserve credit for trading Mullens for Rodrigue Beaubois.

Denver Nuggets: C

8 of 30

2007: No Picks

2008: No Picks

2009: 2nd Round: Sergio Llull sold to Houston

2010: No Picks

2011: 1st Round: Kenneth Faried, Jordan Hamilton (via trade)

Denver followed the same path that Cleveland followed, trying to add pieces to the team by trading draft picks when Carmelo Anthony was on the team.

However, with the picks they have made (basically just Faried), they've had some impressive success.

Detroit Pistons: B-

9 of 30

2007: 1st Round: Rodney Stuckey, Arron Afflalo, 2nd Round: Sammy Mejia

2008: 1st Round: D.J. White (traded to Seattle for Walter Sharpe) 2nd Round: Deron Washington

2009: 1st Round: Austin Daye, 2nd Round: DaJuan Summers, Jonas Jerebko, Chase Budinger sold to Houston

2010: 1st Round: Greg Monroe, 2nd Round: Terrico White

2011: 1st Round: Brandon Knight, 2nd Round: Kyle Singler, Vernon Macklin

The Pistons have been legitimately good at drafting players over the past five years, the only problem is they've either kept the wrong players or only drafted mid-level players.

Rodney Stuckey, Arron Afflalo, Austin Daye, Jonas Jerebko, Chase Budinger, Greg Monroe and Brandon Knight are all legit basketball players. That's a pretty good list right there.

Golden State Warriors: C+

10 of 30

2007: 1st Round: Marco Belinelli, 2nd Round: Jermareo Davidson, Stephane Lasme

2008: 1st Round: Anthony Randolph, 2nd Round: Richard Hendrix

2009: 1st Round: Stephen Curry

2010: 1st Round: Ekpe Udoh

2011: 1st Round: Klay Thompson, 2nd Round: Charles Jenkins

Much like the Detroit Pistons, Golden State has made some very good picks over the past five seasons—they just haven't all panned out for the team that drafted them.

Marco Belinelli, Anthony Randolph, Steph Curry and Klay Thompson are all good players, and when we're talking about the NBA draft, four out of nine isn't bad.

Houston Rockets: C-

11 of 30

2007: 1st Round: Aaron Brooks, 2nd Round: Brad Newley

2008: 1st Round: Nicolas Batum (traded for Donte Greene and future pick), 2nd Round: Maarty Leunen

2009: 2nd Round: Purchased Jermaine Taylor, Sergio Llull and Chase Budinger

2010: 1st Round: Patrick Patterson

2011: 1st Round: Marcus Morris, Nikola Mirotic (traded for Donatas Motiejunas), 2nd Round: Chandler Parsons

Houston has done a good job of picking and choosing players that they like and getting them if they want them—they just haven't hit any home runs.

Chandler Parsons, Chase Budinger, Nic Batum and Aaron Brooks are all good players at this point and Patrick Patterson has some promise, so there are no real complaints there.

Indiana Pacers: C+

12 of 30

2007: No Picks

2008: 1st Round: Jerryd Bayless, 2nd Round: Nathan Jawai

2009: 1st Round: Tyler Hansbrough, 2nd Round: A.J. Price

2010: 1st Round: Paul George, 2nd Round: Lance Stephenson, Ryan Reid

2011: 1st Round: Kawhi Leonard, 2nd Round: Davis Bertans (Both traded for George Hill)

Indiana had some troubles back in 2007 and 2008, picking guys who didn't do much at all with the two picks they had.

However, once George got picked up and Kawhi Leonard was nabbed in 2011 (and swapped for Hill), they reasserted themselves as good drafters.

Los Angeles Clippers: B

13 of 30

2007: 1st Round: Al Thornton, 2nd Round: Jared Jordan

2008: 1st Round: Eric Gordon, 2nd Round: DeAndre Jordan

2009: 1st Round: Blake Griffin

2010: 1st Round: Al-Farouq Aminu, 2nd Round: Willie Warren

2011: 2nd Round: Trey Thompkins, Travis Leslie

It's pretty easy to make some good picks if you pick early in the draft year in and year out.

Blake Griffin is obviously the belle of the ball here, but Gordon was also a home run and DeAndre Jordan was a legitimate steal.

Los Angeles Lakers: D-

14 of 30

2007: 1st Round: Javaris Crittenton, 2nd Round: Sun Yue, Marc Gasol

2008: 2nd Round: Joe Crawford

2009: 1st Round: Toney Douglas (traded to NYK for a future pick and cash), 2nd Round: Patrick Beverly, Chinemelu Elonu

2010: 2nd Round: Devin Ebanks, Derrick Caracter

2011: 2nd Round: Darius Morris, Andrew Goudelock, Chu Chu Maduabum (tragically traded to Denver), Ater Majok

The Los Angeles Lakers have been good over the past five years. Not good at drafting, but good at basketball in general, so it's hard to imagine that they'd have great drafts.

Still, even a blind squirrel finds a nut from time-to-time, right? All they have to show for the past five years is Devin Ebanks, Darius Morris, Andrew Goudelock and Marc Gasol (who they traded for Pau). Plus they never even gave Chu Chu Maduabum a shot.

Memphis Grizzlies: D-

15 of 30

2007: 1st Round: Mike Conley

2008: 1st Round: Kevin Love (traded for O.J. Mayo), Donte Greene

2009: 1st Round: Hasheem Thabeet, DeMarre Carroll, 2nd Round: Sam Young

2010: 1st Round: Xavier Henry, Dominique Jones (sold to Dallas), Greivis Vasquez

2011: 2nd Round: Josh Selby

The only redemption they have here is the fact that they drafted Mike Conley.

Sure, you can argue that O.J. Mayo worked out pretty well, but in the end they downgraded from Love to Mayo, so there's not a lot of credit to give there.

Otherwise, they had the biggest whiff that everyone saw coming with Hasheem Thabeet in 2009.

Miami Heat: D-

16 of 30

2007: 1st Round: Jason Smith (traded for Daequan Cook), 2nd Round: Stanko Barac

2008: 1st Round: Michael Beasley, 2nd Round: Darnell Jackson (traded for future pick)

2009: 2nd Round: Marcus Thornton (traded for future pick and cash), Robert Dozier

2010: 2nd Round: Dexter Pittman, Jarvis Varnado, Da'Sean Butler and Latavious Williams

2011: 2nd Round: Bojan Bogdanovic (traded for Norris Cole)

Much like the Memphis Grizzlies, the Miami Heat have done very little in the draft and had one of the big flops of a No. 2 pick in the past five years.

The trade for Norris Cole was the best thing they did for their team currently, but picking Michael Beasley was a huge flop for Miami even though he is decent at this point.

Milwaukee Bucks: C

17 of 30

2007: 1st Round: Yi Jianlian, 2nd Round: Ramon Sessions

2008: 1st Round: Joe Alexander, 2nd Round: Luc Richard Mbah a Moute

2009: 1st Round: Brandon Jennings, 2nd Round: Jodie Meeks

2010: 1st Round: Larry Sanders, 2nd Round: Darington Hobson, Jerome Jordan (sold to NYK), Tiny Gallon

2011: 1st Round: Jimmer Fredette (traded to Sac for Tobias Harris, others) 2nd: John Leuer

The Milwaukee Bucks have done a great job in the second round, and they got the pleasure of drafting Jimmer Fredette without having to actually play the guy.

Ramon Sessions and Luc Richard Mbah a Moute were home runs as far as the second round goes, and Brandon Jennings was obviously a good pick.

Minnesota Timberwolves: B-

18 of 30

2007: 1st Round: Corey Brewer, 2nd Round: Chris Richard

2008: 1st Round: O.J. Mayo (traded for Kevin Love), 2nd Round: Nikola Pekovic, Mario Chalmers (traded for cash, future picks)

2009: 1st Round: Ricky Rubio, Jonny Flynn, Ty Lawson (traded for future pick [Luke Babbitt]), Wayne Ellington, 2nd: Nick Calathes (future pick and cash), Henk Norel

2010: 1st Round: Wesley Johnson, Luke Babbitt (traded for Martell Webster), Trevor Booker (traded for Lazar Hayward), 2nd Round: Paulo Prestes, Hamady N'Diaye (part of Hayward trade)

2011: 1st Round: Derrick Williams, Donatas Motiejunas (traded for Nikola Mirotic who was traded for Norris Cole and Malcolm Lee, Cole was traded for Bojan Bogdanovic)

Good Lord, the Minnesota Timberwolves have the most muddled previous five years when it comes to the NBA draft, and you know what, for all the crap that David Kahn gets, it seems to have worked out.

A few second round steals in Nik Pekovic and Mario Chalmers (now with Miami) along with legitimate guys like Ricky Rubio and Derrick Williams and the trade for Kevin Love seem to overshadow the Luke Babbitts and the Jonny Flynns.

New Orleans Hornets: D-

19 of 30

2007: 1st Round: Julian Wright, 2nd Round: Adam Haluska

2008: 1st Round: Darrell Arthur sold to POR

2009: 1st Round: Darren Collison

2010: 1st Round: Cole Aldrich (traded for Craig Brackins)

2011: 2nd Round: Josh Harrellson sold to NYK

The New Orleans Hornets should be using this draft to turn around their fortunes, but if the past is any kind of precursor to this year then they could be in big trouble.

Over the past five years Darren Collison is the only player of merit that they drafted, with Darrell Arthur coming in at a very distant second.

New York Knicks: B

20 of 30

2007: 1st Round: Wilson Chandler

2008: 1st Round: Danilo Gallinari

2009: 1st Round: Jordan Hill

2010: 2nd Round: Andy Rautins, Landry Fields

2011: 1st Round: Iman Shumpert

Even though Knicks fans seem to boo regardless of who the pick is, New York has done a good job in the past five drafts with Jordan Hill being the only pick that you could argue was a bad one.

The Chandler and Gallinari picks helped them land Carmelo Anthony, the Landry Fields pick was a steal and Shumpert was a solid choice in a shaky draft last season.

Oklahoma City Thunder: A

21 of 30

2007: 1st Round: Kevin Durant, 2nd Round: Carl Landry (traded for future pick and cash), Glen Davis (traded in Ray Allen trade)

2008: 1st Round: Russell Westbrook, Serge Ibaka, 2nd Round: Walter Sharp, Trent Plaisted (both traded for D.J. White, DeVon Hardin, Sasha Kaun sold to CLE)

2009: 1st Round: James Harden, Rodrigue Beaubois (traded for Byron Mullens)

2010: 1st Round: Eric Bledsoe (traded for future pick, Craig Brackins, Quincy Pondexter (both traded for Cole Aldrich), 2nd Round: Magnum Rolle sold to IND

2011: 1st Round: Reggie Jackson

The Oklahoma City Thunder is the example that every rebuilding team should follow. We hear that at least once a week, and it's not without reason.

In the past five years they have drafted eight players who are now one of the seven best players on their respective teams. Not too shabby.

Orlando Magic: F

22 of 30

2007: 2nd Round: Reyshawn Terry (traded for Milovan Rakovic)

2008: 1st Round: Courtney Lee

2009: No Picks

2010: 1st Round: Daniel Orton, 2nd Round: Stanley Robinson

2011: 2nd Round: DeAndre Liggins

Good golly, the Magic have done nothing in the draft over the past five seasons.

Sure, Courtney Lee had a decent run for them in 2009, but he's the only legitimate basketball player of the bunch (sorry Daniel Orton).

Philadelphia 76ers: B-

23 of 30

2007: 1st Round: Thaddeus Young, Daequan Cook (traded for Jason Smith), Petteri Koponen (traded for Derrick Byars and cash), 2nd Round: Kyrylo Fesenko (traded for Herbert Hill)

2008: 1st Round: Marreese Speights

2009: 1st Round: Jrue Holiday

2010: 1st Round: Evan Turner

2011: 1st Round: Nikola Vucevic, 2nd Round: Lavoy Allen

It seems like the Philadelphia 76ers have used their first round pick wisely in every season since 2007.

Thaddeus Young is looking good off the bench, as are Jrue Holiday and Evan Turner with Nikola Vucevic and Lavoy Allen coming up. Oh, and Marreese Speights has been pretty good himself.

They may not be home runs, but almost every pick they've taken in the past five years have turned out solid.

Phoenix Suns: D+

24 of 30

2007: 1st Round: Rudy Fernandez, Alando Tucker 2nd Round: D.J Strawberry

2008: 1st Round: Robin Lopez, 2nd Round: Malik Hairston (traded for Goran Dragic)

2009: 1st Round: Earl Clark, 2nd Round: Taylor Griffin, Emir Preldzic (sold to CLE)

2010: 2nd Round: Gani Lawal, Dwayne Collins

2011: 1st Round: Markieff Morris

The Phoenix Suns need to stop drafting one of two brothers in any given draft—it just doesn't seem to turn out well.

Robin Lopez is the worse of the Lopez twins, Taylor Griffin is playing basketball in one of the Dakotas and Markieff Morris may be better than Marcus, but he's not a great player by any definition.

Portland Trail Blazers: F

25 of 30

2007: 1st Round: Greg Oden, 2nd Round: Josh McRoberts, Derrick Byars (traded for Petteri Koponen), Taurean Green, Demetris Nichols (traded for future pick)

2008: 1st Round: Brandon Rush (part of trade for Jerryd Bayless, Ike Diogu), 2nd Round: Joey Dorsey (traded for Nicolas Batum), Omer Asik (traded for picks), Mike Taylor (traded for future pick)

2009: 1st Round: Victor Claver, 2nd Round: Donte Cunningham, John Brockman (traded for Jeff Pendergraph), Patty Mills

2010: 1st Round: Elliott Williams, 2nd Round: Armon Johnson

2011: 1st Round: Nolan Smith, 2nd Round: Jon Diebler

As good as the Portland Trail Blazers have been over the past five years (save last season) it seems like they would have some much better draft picks in that time.

Nope, the best they can lay claim to is Omer Asik, Josh McRoberts and Brandon Rush. Not exactly stunning names, by any means.

Sacramento Kings: B

26 of 30

2007: 1st Round: Spencer Hawes

2008: 1st Round: Jason Thompson 2nd Round: Sean Singletary, Pat Ewing

2009: 1st Round: Tyreke Evans, Omri Casspi, 2nd: Jeff Pendergraph (traded for Jon Brockman)

2010: 1st Round: DeMarcus Cousins, 2nd Round: Hassan Whiteside

2011: 1st Round: Bismack Biyombo (part of Jimmer Fredette trade), 2nd Round: Tyler Honeycutt, Isaiah Thomas

The Sacramento Kings are slowly digging themselves out of a hole, and they've done it with solid drafts.

Hell, I'm even willing to overlook the fact that they wanted Jimmer Fredette enough to trade for him.

San Antonio Spurs: B-

27 of 30

2007: 1st Round: Tiago Splitter, 2nd Round: Marcus E. Williams, Giorgos Printezis

2008: 1st Round: George Hill, 2nd Round: Goran Dragic (traded for Malik Hairston, future pick), James Gist

2009: 2nd Round: DeJuan Blair, Jack McClinton, Nano De Colo

2010: 1st Round: James Anderson, 2nd Round: Ryan Richards

2011: 1st Round: Kawhi Leonard, Cory Joseph, 2nd Round: Adam Hanga

The San Antonio Spurs are another team that hasn't had any high draft picks in the past five years, but they just end up going out and grabbing the player they like for a young guy or a future pick.

Otherwise, they take a guy and stash him in Europe for a few years while he matures, like Tiago Splitter and Nano De Colo, who we should be seeing this season.

Toronto Raptors: D+

28 of 30

2007: No Picks

2008: 1st Round: Roy Hibbert (part of Jermaine O'Neal trade)

2009: 1st Round: DeMar DeRozan

2010: 1st Round: Ed Davis

2011: 1st Round: Jonas Valanciunas

The Toronto Raptors have just two players who they can lay claim to over the past five seasons, as DeMar DeRozan and Ed Davis are the only guys in Raptors uniforms. Jonas Valanciunas may end up being a good player, but only time will tell with that.

What's worse than the terrible drafts that they've had is the fact that Roy Hibbert was their best pick and they traded him off to Indiana for Jermaine O'Neal, some baseball cards and a sack of marbles.

Utah Jazz: C-

29 of 30

2007: 1st Round: Morris Almond, 2nd Round: Herbert Hill (traded for Kyrylo Fesenko)

2008: 1st Round: Kosta Koufos, 2nd Round: Ante Tomic, Tadija Dragicevic

2009: 1st Round: Eric Maynor, 2nd Round: Goran Suton

2010: 1st Round: Gordon Hayward, 2nd Round: Jeremy Evans

2011: 1st Round: Enes Kanter, Alec Burks

Utah has done a pretty good job of getting the best they can out of the spots they've had to draft from—picking up some effective players.

Kanter seems to be a promising big man, Burks could be a good contributor off the bench at some point, Hayward is coming along and Kosta Koufos...well, he's Kosta Koufos.

Washington Wizards: C-

30 of 30

2007: 1st Round: Nick Young, 2nd Round: Dominic McGuire

2008: 1st Round: JaVale McGee, 2nd Round: Bill Walker sold to BOS

2009: 2nd Round: Jermaine Taylor sold to HOU

2010: 1st Round: John Wall, Lazar Hayward (traded for Trevor Booker), 2nd Round: Nemanja Bjelica sold to MIN

2011: 1st Round: Jan Vesely, Chris Singleton, 2nd Round: Shelvin Mack

The Washington Wizards have picked good players—it's just the brains that are housed inside these good players that have given some Wizards fans fits.

Nick Young and JaVale McGee are good basketball players, they just had some immaturity problems that lead to their trade, otherwise Washington would have a higher grade.
