Amare Stoudemire: NY Knicks' Star Apologizes, but Damage Done from Gay Slur

Gabe ZaldivarJun 2, 2018

Amare Stoudemire is an idiot.

That's the conclusion I came to over the weekend as one stupid tweet from a Twitter troll managed to draw the ire of a grown man who has no doubt heard far worse.

Some of you were soaking up the sun rather than checking up on the latest social media disasters, so we'll get you up to speed here.

Over the weekend, New York Knicks star and vanquisher of fire extinguisher encasings Amare Stoudemire got into a war of words with Twitter user @BFerrelli.

Stoudemire lost.

The NBA hoops fan tried to get under the skin of Stoudemire, and it seems to have worked wonders. Here is the initial tweet response.

"

@Amareisreal you better come back a lot stronger and quicker to make up for this past season mannnnnn deadasss!!!

— B Forreal! (@BFerrelli) June 23, 2012"

Stoudemire was so incensed, he decided to send a direct message back to the troll, and of course it didn't stay a secret.

Here is a screen shot of the DM via Deadspin. NSFW language follows.

That shot would include the initial loss of judgment and subsequent, "oh crap, what have I done?" moment of realization.

Yes, Stoudemire has since apologized, but the damage has been done.

Nothing ever stays a secret on the Internet, and using outdated gay slurs will only make you look like an out-of-touch bigot.

Of course, I don't believe Stoudemire is that. But he does himself no favors by throwing around such a deplorable word to try and take down one of his detractors.

There is so much wrong with this, I really don't know where to begin.

Stoudemire uses an awful word that the NBA has been trying to counter with PSA's. He then actually replies to a fan who is obviously trying to get a rise out of him and starts it all with a DM as though it would be kept secret from the masses.

That's dumb with a side of stupid.

Of course, using slurs is the most egregious error in all this. But the fact Stoudemire possibly thought a DM would stay secret or might be a safer avenue to get nasty has me shaking my head a little longer than I would have.

Practice safe tweeting, NBA stars. Oh, and try not to use ignorant slurs because it makes you look like an idiot.

Follow me on Twitter because I said so.
