Steve Nash Must Avoid New York Knicks in Hopes of Claiming NBA Title

Ben ChodosJun 20, 2012

Steve Nash is a future Hall of Famer, but his impressive résumé is still missing one thing: an NBA championship. There are several contenders that would love to bring on the veteran point guard to help him accomplish this goal, including the New York Knicks.

But if Nash truly wants to win a ring before he hangs it up, he can't sign with the Knicks.

According to Jared Zwerling of ESPN New York, Nash said, "The Knicks are a great franchise and I live in New York City (each summer), so I'd definitely consider them if they were interested," at a promotional event in Manhattan.

The announcement has already created buzz around the Big Apple. Knicks color commentator Walt “Clyde” Frazier even posted a picture of himself with Nash on Twitter.

Nash has been one of the most efficient players in the NBA throughout his career and is still playing at an extremely high level at 38 years of age.

This past season, he averaged 12.5 points and 10.7 assists per game on 53.2 percent shooting—a mark that led all guards in the NBA.

The two-time MVP’s unselfishness and decision-making would be a boost to any team in the league. With an ability to make everyone around him better, several teams could win a championship with him as their floor general.

The Knicks, however, are not one of those teams.

The one area in which Nash has never excelled is defense. With a core of Nash, Carmelo Anthony and Amar'e Stoudemire, New York would be a liability on that end of the floor, particularly against the top offenses in the Association.

Not even Defensive Player of the Year Tyson Chandler could compensate for their lack of defensive abilities.

That is not to say this Big Three would not be a force to be reckoned with on offense. But while they could light up the scoreboard on any given night, they would not be able to make a deep run through the postseason.

Nash will have his pick of the litter when free agency starts, and he can certainly find a better fit than New York. He deserves a championship, and playing for the Knicks will not get him one.
