NBA Free Agents 2012: Players Who Will Be Overpaid

Ryan RudnanskyJun 7, 2018

Ah, free agency: where overpaying players happens.

This year, NBA's free agency (which begins on July 1) will not be any different than past years. Aging-but-proven veterans will receive too much money, as will players who displayed "potential" this season.

There are always those players whose reputation on the hardwood appears to precede their actual play or some clear-cut concerns moving forward. This piece is dedicated to those players.

Here are some players who will be overpaid in NBA free agency, 2012.

Eric Gordon, SG

This is not a knock on Eric Gordon, the player. This is a knock on Eric Gordon, the guy who cannot stay on the floor. In the past three seasons, Gordon has missed 20, 26 and 57 games (FYI: He has only been the league for four years). I'm not saying a team should not look to add him—he is shooting 45 percent from the floor for his career and 37 percent from downtown. What I am saying is he is going to receive way too much money with his injury history.

Jason Terry, SG

Jason Terry just had another solid season for the Dallas Mavericks, averaging 15.1 points. He also played well in the playoffs. But, the fact of the matter is, Terry is 34 years old, and it is only a matter of time before the 6'2", 180-pound guard starts breaking down. Nonetheless, a team will look to add the proven veteran, and give up too much in the process.

Ray Allen, SG

Ray Allen is one of the greatest sharpshooters this game has ever known. That's why it is so hard to put him here. But his performance in the playoffs this season showed an aging player on the decline. Allen, who has shot 45 percent from the floor and 40 percent from downtown in his career, shot under 40 percent in the 2012 playoffs, and 30 percent from downtown. That's not to mention Allen being 36 years old and the fact that he missed 20 games in the regular season due to injury.
