Sally Jessy Raphael Imparts Glasses Wisdom to Nerd-Chic Russell Westbrook

Gabe ZaldivarJun 7, 2018

Russell Westbrook may seem like a fashion-forward NBA star, but his nerd glasses that are now en vogue have been around for years. Now the woman who made them famous is here to give some words of warning.

We have all been blessed with the one thing that keeps NBA playoff podiums something worth watching, and that's the ridiculous outfits worn by a myriad of athletes.

The best of the bunch is the guard who just can't seem to pass the ball or pull off tacky outfits—Russell Westbrook.

There would be no reason to watch post-game interviews without him.

One of the more recent bizarre wardrobes that we continue to gush over is his 1950's kid's room wallpaper shirt with red, Sally Jesse Raphael glasses.

Well, the famous daytime talk show host has received the memo about her look being taken up by another, and she has some kind words of caution.

She sat down with Time Magazine and stated that she wasn't familiar with Westbrook, but did give some wisdom on racking red glasses.

"

The basketball player better be careful.

When you become known for the cigar in your mouth, like comedians do, or glasses, or pink hair, or whatever it is, if it’s an external thing, it begins to own you...If I go out to a mall where I live now, and anybody recognizes me, they say, ‘oh, why don’t you have your red glasses? Like I’m doing something illegal.

"

She then imparts a tale of a woman who caught her at an airport and asked for her picture. When Raphael agreed, the woman asked if she had her famous red glasses.

The fact that the famous talk show host did not was enough for the woman to say, "OK, maybe we’ll get a picture some other time," according to the Time article.

Well, that's dumb.

I will take a picture with you, Sally. With or without your famous spectacles.

As for Westbrook, the Thunder point guard is being typecast more as a quick Steve Urkel, so I don't think this is an issue.

It's all fun and games because Westbrook doesn't care what look he is known for. In fact, I am pretty sure he doesn't care what he looks like period.

Living by your own fashion sense, now that's swag.
