Steve Nash's Top 3 Best-Case Scenarios

Ethan Sherwood StraussJun 1, 2018

For all the focus on how Steve Nash can help the Knicks, they most likely can't afford him.

Portland is actually the team best positioned to sign the two-time MVP. I know, it doesn't sound sexy, and owner Paul Allen can run a messy operation. But the Blazers will only have $34 million in committed salary next year, placing them at $20 million under the cap. If they miss out on the Deron Williams sweepstakes, Nash is a logical signing.

LaMarcus Aldridge is the perfect player to pair with Nash because he hits the pick-and-pop jumper as well as any big in the game. Aldridge is also adept at finishing near the rim, an area where Nash can certainly deliver the ball out of pick-and-roll pocket-pass avenues. And don't discount the importance of Nash playing close to his Vancouver home.

The San Antonio Spurs are another fit I like for the best Canadian player in league history. It sounds funny at first, on account of the Spurs-Suns rivalry, but Nash could vie for a championship in the Southwest. With Tim Duncan's $21 million salary coming off the books, expect this team to sign the legend at a far cheaper price. This would enable San Antonio to add Nash to the picture.

The Heat have been talked about as a Nash option, but I can't see it happening, considering all the money they've committed. But, Pat Riley has yet to use the amnesty option and it's one that could bring Nash to South Beach. If, say, Mike Miller and his $6 million-per-year salary get wiped from the books, we could see Nash, James, Wade and Bosh all on one team. The most unlikely of these scenarios is the most enticing one.
