NBA Draft 2012: Assessing Overall Value of Anthony Davis
Anthony Davis is definitely worth the No. 1 overall pick in the 2012 NBA draft. There is no disputing that, as no player had a finer collegiate season coupled with the immense upside that Davis possesses.
It’s rare that a big man comes around who has the Kentucky star’s size (6’10.5”, 222 pounds), wingspan (7’5.5”) and reach (9’0”) and also displays an uncanny disposition for high quality defense while being a catalyst for an amazing team that won the NCAA tournament without a problem.
The New Orleans Hornets have fielded a few offers for the No. 1 pick—notably from the Cavaliers in an attempt to swap all four of their draft picks for the spot—but likely are going to hold on to the selection. They have a good inclination of what sort of impact a player like Davis can make on a franchise.
In his rookie season, it’s likely that the 19-year-old has some growing pains but flashes the defensive ability that will make him a star.
He’s going to have to work hard over the summer and during the season to gain strength and add some bulk to truly protect the paint.
If he's able to do that, he's a likely a frontrunner for the Rookie of the Year award.
His offensive game definitely needs some work, but he’s got great ball-handling abilities and a decent shot that will start to fall with more regularity as he gets more comfortable against NBA opposition.
Eventually, Davis is going to be a well-rounded superstar that likely makes multiple All-Star appearances, wins Defensive Player of the Year awards and makes All-NBA teams.
That is all the Hornets can ask for in exchange for the first overall pick in the 2012 NBA draft.
