2012 NBA Lottery Results: Breaking Down Biggest Losers from Draft Drawing
The NBA draft lottery had its fair share of winners on Wednesday, but the teams that may have lost out on big opportunities are likely the ones who will remember the drawing most.
Many were surprised to see the New Orleans Hornets leap all the way from No. 4 to No. 1 in the lottery, and while that is a major coup for them since they will be able to select Kentucky forward Anthony Davis with the first-overall selection. New Orleans' sizable leap will prove to be extremely disadvantageous for other teams, though.
Here are three teams who lost out big time on Wednesday, and while it doesn't mean they can't necessarily have a good draft anyway, it has gotten much more difficult for them to do so.
Brooklyn Nets
The Brooklyn Nets were in quite an interesting spot in the lottery as they had traded their first-round pick to the Portland Trail Blazers. Had the Nets' pick been in the top three, however, Brooklyn would have retained it. Nets fans were praying that they would ascend from their No. 6 position, but it was not to be as they got the sixth pick as expected. That means that the pick goes to Portland and the Nets are left without a first rounder despite their poor 2011-12 season.
With point guard Deron Williams seeming unlikely to re-sign, the Nets could have really used a player like Davis, Thomas Robinson or Michael Kidd-Gilchrist to convince him to stay. That didn't happen, though, so Brooklyn is still in a very bad way. The Blazers, on the other hand, are now in a great spot because they have two picks in the top 11 in order to quickly bounce back from a poor campaign.
Charlotte Bobcats
Entering the lottery many thought that the lowly Charlotte Bobcats would somehow miss out on the top pick and that is precisely what happened as the Hornets leapfrogged them and left the Bobcats at No. 2. While the second pick normally isn't something to sneeze at, the talent gap between Davis and the second-best player is a wide one. Charlotte will likely take Kansas power forward Thomas Robinson, and although he has a lot of potential, he's no Davis.
The Bobcats won just seven games this past season and were one of the most pathetic squads in recent memory. They desperately needed to get the No. 1 pick because the franchise lacks direction and doesn't have a true go-to player. Davis would have been that and a whole lot more, but instead Charlotte will have to take a good player that must be counted on to be a superstar. That isn't fair to Robinson, but the Bobcats have little else to hang their hats on at this point.
Washington Wizards
While the Washington Wizards may not have gotten the short end of the stick as much as the Nets and Bobcats, the lottery didn't go particularly well for them either. New Orleans' foray to the top forced the Wiz from No. 2 to No. 3 and it may cost them the player they were targeting. It's tough to say for sure who Washington was planning on taking if it landed the No. 2 pick as expected, but Robinson was probably a real possibility.
Charlotte seems likely to go that route, however, and it will force the Wizards to resort to Plan C after not getting the No. 1 pick either. Their third choice would probably be Kentucky forward Michael Kidd-Gilchrist, and while he is an intriguing prospect who can do a little bit of everything, he may not be the stud power forward Washington was hoping for. The Wizards have some pieces to build around, but the circumstances aren't ideal following the lottery.
