French Open 2012 Day 4: Roger Federer vs. Adrian Ungur Preview
Roger Federer will be back in action on Day 4 at the 2012 French Open as he faces Romania's Adrian Ungur. Federer is into the second round following a routine victory in the first round over Tobias Kamke. Ungur, a very inexperienced player, was made to work a bit against David Nalbandian in their first-round match.
Federer is a massive favorite to win his second-round match against Ungur, a player that the Swiss maestro has never faced before. Paddy Power, for example, has the world No. 3 priced at 1 to 500 (-50000) to win the match straight up.
Ungur is ranked 92nd in the world and he has recent losses to Juan Monaco, Inigo Cervantes-Huegun and Ivan Dodig. There is not much to suggest that the Romanian will compete well against Federer in their Wednesday match, and arguably Ungur has already overachieved just in making the second round at Roland Garros. The 27-year old is playing in his first Grand Slam tournament and can't be hoping to do much against the world No. 3 except try hard.
Federer's draw to the quarters at the 2012 French Open might be the most simplistic draw in the history of Grand Slam tennis. Andy Roddick was the closest seeded player in the draw, but it didn't seem like he wanted anything to do with the clay-court season and Roland Garros was no exception. Feliciano Lopez, another seeded player in Federer's section, made his annual first-round departure at Roland Garros. Radek Stepanek, another seeded player who was near Federer, looks a little too old for Grand Slam tennis as he couldn't beat David Goffin in their first-round match.
Arnaud Clement, a former Grand Slam finalist, is the most talented possible opponent remaining in Federer's section of the draw, but the Frenchman is 34 years old and I don't think he'll be able to keep running with the younger players in the draw.
Federer had 47 unforced errors in the first round, and if there was a good clay-courter in his section, the 2009 French Open champion might be kept honest or at least made to work before the quarters. As it is, it looks like Fed will run roughshod over Ungur, Martin Klizan and Lukasz Kubot in what looks like ATP 250-type competition.
Federer's quarterfinal opponent is yet to be determined, but the Swiss maestro promises to enter the quarterfinals having only played 12 sets in the tournament. Tomas Berdych and Juan Martin del Potro can give Fed a run for his money as they each have career victories over the World No. 3 in Grand Slam play.
But whomever Fed plays in the quarters promises to be a lot more beaten up by that point in the tournament, as Federer is looking at a draw that even much lesser talents probably wouldn't screw up.
For the punters out there, the Swiss Maestro is priced at -600 (1/6) to beat Ungur straight up. Federer and Ungur are scheduled second on Court Philippe Chatrier on Wednesday.
