4 Burning Questions That Have Already Been Answered in NFL OTAs

John RozumJun 2, 2018

We're still a little over three months away from the 2012 NFL season kicking off, but guys like Peyton Manning have given our minds peace regarding burning questions.

But before we get into how Manning fared at OTAs, there are other teams with interesting situations.

Ironically, all of them involve the quarterback position, and we're seeing the beginning of some competitions unfold. To that end, let's see what's transpired as we hit June later this week.

Tim Tebow or Mark Sanchez for the Jets?

1 of 4

Tim Tebow is the most popular and well-known backup quarterback in NFL history, aside from those who are aware of Earl Morrall.

Tebow is expected to challenge Mark Sanchez for the starting role, and rightfully so, because Tebow took the NFL by storm last season while Sanchez and the Jets flopped down the stretch.

As for the 2012 season, Tebow was outshined by Sanchez at Gang Green's OTAs. As noted in an article by Jenny Vrentas of The Star-Ledger, Tebow has a lot of room to improve:

"

Some of Tebow's passes came out a bit high. He was picked off on back-to-back passes in 7-on-7 drills, by Bart Scott and new Jets safety Yeremiah Bell. ...

Sanchez looked pretty sharp (and in case you were wondering, was the best quarterback on the field). His first three passes in 11-on-11s were incomplete, but that included a drop or two from his receivers.

"

Fortunately for Tebow, he has time to improve his accuracy, mechanics, timing and decision-making. As for right now, though, Sanchez is the expected starter, and Tebow's only shot to start will be if Sanchez underachieves, just like Kyle Orton did for Denver in 2011.

Does Russell Wilson Have a Legit Shot to Start?

2 of 4

According to John Boyle of the Everett Herald, the Seattle Seahawks are having thrice the fun with their quarterback competition:

"

Granted it's May, but this three-way QB competition is more than Pete Carroll hyperbole. All three splitting reps evenly in this week's OTAs

— John Boyle (@johnpboyle) May 24, 2012"

At this rate, it's going to be one intriguing offseason in the Great Northwest. Here we have three quarterbacks who bring different skill sets, NFL experience and attributes to the table, and yet all are unproven as well.

Tarvaris Jackson is coming off the best season of his career, but his inconsistent production played a big role in Seattle's lack of a passing game.

Matt Flynn has been a career backup in Green Bay but set franchise records in Week 17 against the playoff-bound Lions to get the win as a starter.

And then there's rookie quarterback Russell Wilson from Wisconsin. Wilson had a strong college career and capped it off with an impressive senior season in a pro-style offense. He's more mobile and accurate than Jackson and Flynn, but he also lacks experience and size by comparison.

If there's one quarterback competition to follow this year, it's Seattle's, because it's the most wide open and even heading into this season.

How Does Peyton Manning Look?

3 of 4

According to the Associated Press via ESPN, Peyton Manning looked strong at OTAs:

"

His passes were hitting receivers in stride and right between the numbers, not skipping off the ground or whizzing behind their heads like so many of Tim Tebow's. ...

And Manning looked great, showing zip and accuracy on his passes, comfort under center, complete command of his offense and no ill effects from the nerve injury that caused weakness in his throwing arm.

"

As if Manning was going to look any other way tossing the rock, right?

Still, he did have to go out and put on the show to remove all doubt regarding his overall health. There may have been some doubt due to Manning's age and him not having taken snaps in what seems like forever. However, watching him back in action solidifies every reason why the Denver Broncos made the move.

The Broncos' receiving corps remains unproven, and their production with a legit NFL quarterback under center will bring out the ultimate potential. Get excited, Denver fans, because 2012 has increased expectations with another future Hall of Famer at the helm.

Is It Matt Moore's Job to Lose in Miami?

4 of 4

Matt Moore finished the 2011 season as the Miami Dolphins' starting quarterback, and he looks to be the expected Week 1 starter as he heads into June.

After all, the man did put on a good show last year and saved the Dolphins' season from a catastrophic breakdown; however, Miami still went and added veteran David Garrard and rookie Ryan Tannehill to the mix.

Omar Kelly and Izzy Gould of the South Florida Sun-Sentinel put their spin on Miami's practice last week:

"

I've consulted with the jury, and we're giving today's OTA session to David Garrard. Decision making is quick. Tannehill is slow. ...

Dolphins QB Ryan Tannehill threw one great pass during practice. It was a well timed slant. Guess who the receiver was? Jeff Fuller.

"

Now, the learning curve for Tannehill is going to be longer, as he rarely took snaps from under center in college and didn't have to make as many reads. On the few he did take, he was not very quick, which he will need to be in the NFL. Even with Mike Sherman as the Dolphins' offensive coordinator, Tannehill is learning a new game, which puts him at a disadvantage.

Garrard has the most experience and is the biggest threat to Moore for the starting role. He's mobile, has a strong arm, is impressively accurate and knows how to spread the ball around.

Moore is confident after a strong season and developed a lot in 2011 to earn his opportunity for 2012. Don't expect Moore to be given much room for error, though, as Garrard and Tannehill will be waiting for him to slip up.
