College Football: 2013 Weekly Recruiting Roundup May 17-24

Michael FelderJun 7, 2018

Last week was an absolute bang-up week in recruiting as University of Southern California and Alabama made some big waves with highly touted recruits. The successes continue this week as teams are fighting to get commitments and kids from coast to coast are pledging their allegiance to the colleges of their choice.

USC added to their Ty Isaac success by putting Justin Davis in their class, giving the Trojans two elite running backs for the 2013 cycle.

At Oklahoma, Bob Stoops and the Sooners are still getting after it on the trail. Ahmad Thomas committed to the school in Norman. The defensive back from Florida committed to the Sooners without taking a visit, all thanks to the relationship that he has built with the coaching staff. Thomas looks to help improve that Oklahoma secondary that struggled mightily a season ago.

In the ACC, two schools got some solid commitments at the quarterback position. North Carolina just grabbed Mitch Trubisky, a dual-threat passer from Ohio who looks to be an ideal quarterback for Larry Fedora's system. Miami, who has quietly been building a solid class under Al Golden, just added Kevin Olsen to their 2013 class. The quarterback is from New Jersey, which shows Golden is still trolling the waters of his former stomping grounds of Temple.

To wrap things up we camp out in the SEC, a conference that saw a lot of action across the board since our last update. Newcomer Texas A&M is still burning down the doors on the trail as they add linebacker Brett Wade to their 2013 haul. The Aggies are truly building a solid class heading into their first season in the SEC.

Arkansas, a team that has seen their recruiting push struggle after the Bobby Petrino scandal, is starting to pick up some steam. This week the Razorbacks added a trio of area recruits to their class. Two defensive players in safety Alex Brignoni and linebacker Brooks Ellis plus a quarterback in Austin Allen are into the fold for temporary head coach John L. Smith. Watching the Hogs will be interesting as they fight for their 2012 season but also much plan for the future.

Also in the SEC West, we have LSU grabbing a big-time quarterback commitment. After missing on Gunner Kiel a season ago, and speculation that Jeremy Liggins will play another position for the Bayou Bengals, Les Miles really needed a quarterback in this class. Enter Hayden Rettig. The California quarterback pledged his allegiance to LSU this week.

Auburn was able to get a quarterback pledge as well; Jeremy Johnson committed to Gene Chizik and staff this week. Good for the Tigers, but their two biggest rivals have been hitting the trail as well.

Alabama and Georgia each added two players to their big classes for 2013. The Tide got Jonathan Allen and Darius Paige into the fold to continue to stuff their cupboard full of defensive linemen. Georgia went to work on the other side of the ball; adding Josh Cardiello and Brandon Kublanow to their 2013 cycle to bolster their offensive line.

Derek Dooley, the poster boy for the hot seat in the SEC, is still out there working to get talent into the program and keep his job. Kameron Miles, a Dallas-area defensive back, pledged his allegiance to the Volunteers, a move born out of his desire to play his college football in the SEC. Great get for a team that will have to get their defense better if they want to improve their standing in the SEC East.

It was a great week in so many spots, and as we get ready for the approaching summer season things will get interesting with commitments, decommitments and coaches looking to build their classes. We'll be here every Thursday, ready to get you caught up on all the action from the last week.
