2012 NFL Free Agents: Most Explosive RBs Still Waiting for a Phone Call

David DanielsMay 22, 2012

Running backs are special weapons.

The vast majority of NFL teams already have their starting running back for the 2012-2013 season set in stone. That doesn’t mean they still don’t need a back, though—there are different roles that must be played in a backfield. These five free agents would instantly improve a team’s offense upon their arrival.

5. Cadillac Williams

When given an opportunity to produce, Cadillac performed well last year. In relief for Stephen Jackson, he averaged 4.1 yards a carry and reeled in 14 receptions. Williams is capable of being a solid third-down back for a ballclub.

4. Justin Forsett

After two impressive years as a change-of-pace back, Forsett’s production plummeted in 2011. He simply wasn’t given enough carries to get in a groove. Forsett is only 26-years old so he's capable of being a dangerous scat back for a team lacking big-play potential in the backfield.

LT isn’t a threat as a runner anymore, but he’s a phenomenal third-down back. He recorded 42 receptions last season for 449 yards and two touchdowns out of the backfield. It’s a shame Tomlinson is so close to retirement because he’s still extremely valuable.

2. Ryan Grant

In 2011, Grant’s carries were cut in half from his days as a feature back. He still managed to rack up 559 yards on 4.2 yards a pop, though. Grant is still talented enough to be a rotational player in a two-back system.

1. Cedric Benson

Benson was one of the worst workload halfbacks in the NFL last season. As a power back in a two-back system, though, Benson would add an entirely different dimension a lacking offense. He has character concerns, but the man rushed for over 1,000 yards last season—he’s well worth the risk.
