Barry Bonds: MLB Must Delete His Records or Move on from Him

Harold FriendJun 6, 2018

Face the facts: Barry Bonds holds the record for most career home runs. He also has hit more home runs in a single season than any other player.

Merely look at the record books or sites such as Baseball-Reference.com for confirmation.

MLB cannot have it both ways. If the "deciders'' position is that using banned substances means the alleged user cheated, then delete the records he holds.

That has not happened, and it never will.

And since Barry Bonds' records are recognized, they are valid.

Eleven years have passed since Bonds hit 73 home runs. It seemed inconceivable that a player could hit 73 home runs in a season at the time, and it is more inconceivable today, which confirms Bonds' greatness.

No player in history was more feared than Bonds. He was intentionally walked 120 times in 2004,—Hank Aaron's single-season high in walks was 92—and that's total walks, not intentional walks.

Bonds also holds the single-season record with 232 walks. Babe Ruth's best was 170, a total Bonds topped three times. Aaron's best of 92 was in 1972, when he was 38 years old.

Bonds had his best home run season at the age of 36. Aaron had his best home run season (47) at the age of 37. (It seems that some players really do have their best season after 35 years of age.)

Mark McGwire admitted using performance-enhancing substances. He is the St. Louis Cardinals hitting coach.

Alex Rodriguez admitted using performance-enhancing substances. New York Yankees fans have forgiven him.

Jason Giambi admitted using performance-enhancing substances. He is a favorite in Colorado.

Bonds (and Roger Clemens) have admitted nothing, and those in power don't take kindly to individuals who disagree with their edicts and conclusions.

The only reason that Bonds' record are recognized is because MLB would rather not receive another black eye. It is preferable to try ignoring the issue and rely on Hall of Fame voters to punish alleged steroid users as well as those who have admitted steroid use.

That doesn't bother Barry Bonds, though.
