Andre Drummond to Pistons: Scouting Report, Video Highlights and Analysis

Alex KayMay 31, 2018

Andre Drummond has been widely considered a high-risk, high-reward prospect after his one season with the UConn Huskies.

It's always tough to gamble with a pick in the first round of the 2012 NBA draft, but many feel that this kid could blossom into one of the elite NBA big men.

Drummond’s potential is through the roof, but there are a lot of questions this rookie will have to answer starting immediately in training camp.

What Andre Drummond Brings to the Team

At 6’10” and 270 pounds, Drummond is a freak of nature and has the body to absolutely dominate in the paint from Day 1.

Of course, it is worth noting that during his freshman year of college, he was never able to harness the potential of his massive frame and averaged 10.2 points, 7.7 rebounds and 2.7 blocks per contest.

Those numbers are respectable, but should have been much higher. Perhaps more concerning was Drummond’s performance in the first round of the NCAA tournament, when he put up just two points, three rebounds and four blocks in 26 minutes of play before fouling out.

What The Experts Are Saying

Jonathan Wasserman of NBADraft.net has an opinion on Drummond that many scouts and analysts seem to share:

"

He's a project, and anyone looking to draft him must remain patient. .. Maximizing his development will require the right situation, so he would be best suited in an organization with direction (not Charlotte) ... He needs tremendous polish offensively, but if he hits his stride, Drummond has arguably the highest ceiling of anyone in his class based on his rare physical attributes.

"

If Drummond pans out by working hard on his game and getting more comfortable in his frame, there is no doubt he has some insane upside.

Rookie Impact

This is going to be highly dependent on how the center project develops over the summer and into the fall. It’s possible he could start right away.

If Drummond doesn’t show dedication to improving and harnessing his immense potential, he could fall out of favor quickly and soon be riding the end of the bench during games or possibly even spend some time in the D-League.

As mentioned earlier, this is one of the biggest boom-or-bust risks in the draft.

Pick Analysis

The Pistons have a good young center in Greg Monroe already but needed more help up front, and Drummond could provide that help—or not. Maybe Monroe could show Drummond a thing or two.

If Drummond doesn't mature into a legitimate basketball player, Detroit will wish it had chosen a more polished big man. But you can't fault the Pistons for taking a shot here.
