Mayweather vs. Cotto: Why Rematch Is What Fans Want Next for Money May

Tim KeeneyJun 7, 2018

If Floyd Mayweather truly believes that Miguel Cotto is the toughest guy he's ever fought, he'll do everyone all a favor and give them a rematch.

The fight everyone wants is obviously Mayweather-Manny Pacquiao, but the multiple obstacles Money once again referred to after this weekend's fight mean that won't happen. Fights with Timothy Bradley, who goes up against Pac-Man in June, and Canelo Alvarez, who destroyed Shane Mosley on Mayweather's undercard, have also been mentioned.

But why not Cotto?

Again?

Their first fight is already being talked about as one of the best fights of the year, and rightfully so.

Cotto came after Mayweather with an aggression that not many other fighters can display. While Mayweather, with his all-world defense, deflected a lot of it, he was hit more than ever.

"You're a helluva champion," Mayweather said to Cotto in the ring after the fight (via ESPN). "You're the toughest guy I ever fought."

And that was apparent. Cotto connected with a pinpoint jab that made Mayweather's nose bleed, and he had the undefeated boxer on the ropes multiple times.

Mayweather won unanimously, but Cotto clearly found weak spots in his armor that no one has ever found before.

And, at the very least, it was exciting. You can't tell me fans wouldn't want to see this fight again should Pacquiao fall through yet again. The sheer fact that people are calling for Mayweather-Cotto II just two days after the original fight suggests how amazing the original fight was.

We certainly know Cotto would be up for a rematch.

"The judges said I lost the fight. I can't do anything else. I have to take my defeat," Cotto said. "I brought my best and I did my best every morning in training camp and I did my best tonight."

He was disappointed after the loss and would relish the opportunity to go back after Money in the ring.

As for Mayweather, who said he plans to fight again after his jail sentence in June? He might be a little harder to convince, but if he truly respects Cotto and believes Junito is as good as he says he is, he'll give the fans what they want.

"

He's a tough competitor. I knew I was going to have to come in the ring to fight hard and execute the game plan. Cotto is a future Hall of Famer and he is no pushover. We fought at his weight class. He came to fight. He didn't come to survive, he came to fight. So I dug down and fought him back.

"

Well, then. Why not give the fans Hall of Famer vs. Hall of Famer II?

I know I'm sold.
