Floyd Mayweather vs. Miguel Cotto: Close Victory Will Make Money More Dangerous

Adam WellsJun 5, 2018

Floyd Mayweather is an egotistical maniac who needs to prove that he is the best boxer in the world every time he steps foot in the ring by beating his opponent to a pulp. Miguel Cotto was not supposed to give him a lot of problems on Saturday night, but in doing so, he made Money a better fighter.

When the fight was over, there was no doubt that Mayweather deserved the unanimous decision win the judges gave him. He was the superior fighter over the course of 12 rounds, but it was still closer than most people expected it to be.

To be fair, Mayweather did have a hand problem and was battling a cold that sapped a lot of his energy as the fight moved into the later rounds. (via ESPN)

"

I came into the fight weighing 147 [pounds], so I was four pounds lighter than I was [at Friday's weigh-in].

I was kinda sick and I was having hand problems. So I said, you know what, I still was training in the gym but I was using my hands real light. I didn't get to box the last week like I wanted to. So, you know, things happen. But the main thing is, we got the victory and that's the most important thing.

"

But that is all the more reason to think that Mayweather is going to come back even more dangerous against his next opponent, whoever that might be.

Ego plays a huge role in everything that Mayweather does. He is a businessman who is going to do anything and everything he can to sell himself to the masses. That is not going to happen if he is earning closer-than-expected decision wins against fighters he is clearly superior to.

Whenever Mayweather has been faced with adversity, he has come back stronger his next time out. He had a 16-month layoff before his previous fight with Victor Ortiz, yet he came out in that fight better than ever.

Cotto was able to teach Mayweather a few things about himself, as well as what he must do to stay at the level he has been for his entire career.

A win is a win, but some wins teach us more about an athlete than others. Mayweather's win over Cotto is going to teach us a lot more about him than any victory that came before it.
