Mayweather vs. Cotto 2012: Fight Lived Up to Money May's Massive Hype
Floyd Mayweather's resounding victory over Miguel Cotto was proof once again that Money May is worth the hype he projects on every fight he enters.
He didn't try to over-strategize or play it safe. Instead, Mayweather took to the fight with his chin forward and his guns blazing. He and Cotto had the massive crowd at the MGM Grand Garden Arena roaring with appreciation for their efforts.
Neither fighter hit the deck, but that didn't stop them from beating one another bloody at times.
Mayweather earned the moniker "Baby Face" due to the fact that he rarely takes much punishment. His modus operandi has always been to let his opponent come to him while he utilized his impregnable shell defense to perfection.
Since his fight against Zab Judah in 2006, Mayweather has gone the distance to finish in 12 rounds six-out-of-eight times—one of which was the controversial knockout of Victor Ortiz in the fourth round.
He's never been known as a brawler; rather, Mayweather has always relied on his technical prowess to get him over the top.
He finally took the reins off his game against Cotto, and the resulting fight was one of the most entertaining I've seen in years from Money May.
Cotto gave him all he could handle, and for a little while in the eighth round, it looked like the champ might go down. In the end, though, Mayweather put together one of his most masterful performances in recent memory.
After the fight, Mayweather spoke about the brawl, via ESPN.com:
"Look, when fights are on pay-per-view, you want to give the fans what they pay for, and that's excitement...He's a tough competitor. I knew I was going to have to come in the ring to fight hard and execute the game plan. Cotto is a future Hall of Famer and he is no pushover. We fought at his weight class. He came to fight. He didn't come to survive, he came to fight. So I dug down and fought him back.
"
Mayweather lived up to his massive hype against Cotto.
Now it's time for him to do the same thing and figure out a way to make it happen with Manny Pacquiao.
