Mayweather vs. Cotto Predictions: Why Money Will Keep Undefeated Streak Alive

Timothy RappJun 7, 2018

We can spend as much time as we like hyping the fight between Floyd Mayweather and Miguel Cotto, study every angle, dissect the strategy each fighter should employ and make endless predictions about how it should go.

At the end of the day, Money May should win because he's the better fighter, and anything less than a decisive victory would be surprising.

Mayweather is too smart to get lured into a slugfest, allowing Cotto to get inside and pound away with his considerable power. Mayweather's speed and ability to counter—along with adjust quickly on the fly to whatever his opponent is trying to do—means that Cotto won't be able to dictate the style of this fight long enough to win it.

Cotto can make this interesting, of course. He's an excellent, well-rounded fighter at this point in his career, and I don't think he'll beat himself in this fight. If he can slowly work his way toward a close, blow-for-blow bout with Mayweather, he has a chance.

But Mayweather is simply too good. Consider this, from Ryan Maquinana of CSNBayArea.com:

"

That perfect record [42-0] is as indicative of his precise punching as it is of his defensive excellence.  It’s easy to forget that the only official knockdown of his 16-year pro career came when he put his own glove on the canvas after injuring his hand.  It’s equally convenient to omit that out of the 126 judges to score a Mayweather fight only one has seen it for his opponent upon conclusion.

"

So, let Cotto try to make this a brawl. Let him test his superior power against Mayweather's brilliant defense, superior movement, selective and sniper-like punching and ability to adjust to whatever a fighter throws his way.

Truth is, anyway you slice this fight, it's hard to imagine Cotto coming out on top.

The reign of Mayweather will continue on Saturday night.
