Floyd Mayweather: Money May Can't Afford to Lose

Jesse ReedJun 7, 2018

Floyd Mayweather has built a brand out of his undefeated record of 42-0, but the enterprise will come crashing down to earth with a single loss.

He's earned the moniker, "Money May" due to the record-setting paychecks he hauls in for his fights.

Per Forbes.com, In the upcoming fight vs. Miguel Cotto, Mayweather is guaranteed $45 million for just showing up. He could earn much more than that after all the pay-per-view receipts are tallied—up to $50 million or more.

He is boxing's biggest draw since the good old days of Mike Tyson and the prominence of the great heavyweights that used to dominate the sport.

The only way this whole thing stays afloat is through Mayweather's continued status as undefeated.

Although he is undoubtedly cocky, Mayweather made a good point recently when he said this, via pacquiaovsmayweather.net

"

Pacquiao is only famous because he is connected to my name. When they mention Pacquiao, they say who is that? They say that’s the guy we are trying to get to fight Floyd Mayweather. When they say Floyd Mayweather they say that’s an all time great.

"

While he's wrong about Pacquiao not being recognizable, Mayweather is definitely onto something when he talks about his name being the big draw.

Every time Mayweather rises to the occasion and wins again, fans can't wait until the next match to see if he can continue holding onto his record. Some people tune in to watch and see if he will continue to win, while other people that watch his fights are more interested to see if he'll lose.

Either way, Mayweather's continued winning streak is the source for his financial gains, and the moment he loses a match the pendulum will start to swing the other way.

Money May's brand will take a huge hit with his first loss, and from the standpoint of his career representing a business he can't afford to lose.
