Mayweather vs. Cotto: Why the Boxing World Needs Mayweather to Stay Undefeated

Kevin Van PeltJun 7, 2018

Floyd Mayweather needs to be 43-0 after his fight with Miguel Cotto.

Possibly one of the best pound-for-pound fighters the world has ever seen, Money Mayweather has carried the sport of boxing into the 21st century. His flamboyant style has created controversy and attention to the sport which allows his ticket sales to be through the roof.

Recently, Manny Pacquiao has entered the same category as Mayweather in terms of fighting ability along with gathering attention for boxing.

For years now, everyone has wanted to see a match between these two legendary fighters. Both of them always seem to have some sort of problem that makes this match impossible to put together. This upcoming fight with Cotto was supposed to be with Pacquiao but the deal could not be done into time due to money issues.

Cotto is an excellent boxer. He has a powerful punch and is someone the fans like to see. However, the speed of Mayweather will be too much for him to handle. At least that's what the boxing world is hoping for.

If Mayweather loses, the appeal of the fight between him and Pacquiao will lose interest. The main interest in the fight between these two was the fact that for the first time it seems like Mayweather is actually fighting someone who is his equal and can threaten his undefeated reign.

If Cotto pulls out the upset it will be quite a story. It will be the highlight of his career and will be highly talked about weeks after. However, that will not change the minds of people about who is the better boxer. Mayweather will still be king with most people and think that Cotto just got lucky.

Pacquiao fans will claim that he is best stating that he already beat Cotto in 2009.

A Mayweather loss also gives both fighters another excuse why not to face each other. Pacquiao can claim that he doesn't need to fight Mayweather because he has beaten Cotto who beat Mayweather. Also, he can continue using the blood test excuse. Mayweather can claim that he doesn't need to fight Pacquiao because he has already proven himself.

Nothing against Cotto, but he can't win this fight. It will all but kill the most anticipated fight that hasn't happened yet. Critics might claim that the fight will never happen between Mayweather and Pacquiao so if Cotto wins we should celebrate it. The problem is there are still people out there who think the fight can still happen and do not want to give up hope.

Mayweather needs to win this weekend to help preserve what could be the biggest fight in boxing history over the last decade.
