Mayweather vs. Cotto Predictions: Money's Speed Will Be Too Much for Cotto
Floyd Mayweather is the fastest boxer in the world today. His ability to move in and out at the snap of a finger is the biggest reason that he enters his fight with Miguel Cotto 42-0, and it is why he will leave Las Vegas on Saturday night with yet another victory under his belt.
As you start to break down this fight, the only advantage that Cotto has is in the power department. His career has been built on landing big punches to drop his opponents to the canvas. Of his 37 career wins, 30 of them have come via knockout or TKO.
Cotto wants to come out and turn this fight into a slugfest. His best chance to win this fight is to catch Mayweather trying to be too aggressive early and landing big shots to stun the undefeated challenger.
It sounds simple enough in theory, but it is anything but in execution. Mayweather doesn't get hit because he moves in and out like no one else in the sport. His style is much more selectively aggressive than Cotto's.
Where Cotto has to land shots and attack in order to be successful, Mayweather can play defense in order to set up his offense. He is going to use Cotto's aggressiveness against him in order to win this fight.
After the first bell rings, Mayweather is going to lull Cotto into a false sense of security by letting him throw big punches. The problem is, none of them are going to land flush because Cotto won't be able to catch up to him.
By giving Cotto false openings to throw punches, Mayweather is going to cause him to gas out in the middle rounds.
Therein lies the genius of Mayweather as a fighter. Not only does he pack enough power to defeat a bigger fighter like Cotto, but he understands how to make them beat themselves before he pounces.
Cotto will keep the fight close early, just by virtue of throwing more punches than Mayweather, but eventually the speed of Mayweather is going to doom Cotto and a new champion will be crowned.
