2012 Kentucky Derby Entries: Horses That Will Bring Up Rear

Brian MaziqueJun 3, 2018

The Kentucky Derby favorites are Bodemeister and Union Rags—but what about the long shots? Some of them have a great shot at bucking the odds, but others are long shots for a reason.

These are horses that you'd be better off staying away from—if you have a vested interest in which horses place in the top three.

Here are a few horses that the oddsmakers are right about:

Done Talking

The winner of the Grade III Illinois Derby may look like a safe long shot. But I believe the previous finish at Gotham was more indicative of what to expect from him at the Derby.

He finished 10th there and fourth in the previous race at Remsen. This horse is just too inconsistent to place too much faith in—especially against such a strong field.

In this case, the 50-1 odds are justified and a solid warning sign.

Prospective

This will be Prospective's sixth race in less than a year. His performances have been up and down throughout this time.

Most recently, he finished sixth in the Toyota Blue Grass Stakes. His best finishes have come in lower-grade races. The Toyota Blue Grass was a Grade I, and he did not perform well.

As was the case with his 13th-place finish at the Breeders' Cup Juvenile.

Prospective does not figure to be a factor in the Kentucky Derby. He has proven he will not perform well when the competition is at its stiffest.
