Kentucky Derby Odds 2012: Longshots to Watch at Churchill Downs
Bodemeister and Union Rags are the two favorites in the 2012 Kentucky Derby, but they aren't the only horses to watch. On Saturday, May 5, there are two long shots that could make some noise.
Daddy Nose Best and I'll Have Another come into the Derby running well, and they are definitely horses to watch.
Both colts are listed as 15-1 to win the Derby, but here is a case to at least consider both of them for top-three finishes.
Daddy Nose Best
He is coming off two consecutive wins on tracks that measure one-and-one-eighth mile. He finished both races fairly strong, which would lead you to believe he is prepared to run the Derby well.
Daddy Nose Best comes from a promising pedigree. His dam, Scat Daddy, is responsible for five stakes winners. That includes Daddy Long Legs, who won the UAE Derby this year.
Though Scat Daddy failed to produce in his opportunity in the 2007 Derby, he showed promise. Some may figure Daddy Nose Best is following a similar pattern—but I disagree.
I think he is set to make a better showing in his Derby chance than Scat Daddy did.
I'll Have Another
Stamina could be a primary factor in I'll Have Another's Derby run as well. His pedigree would suggest he is prepared for the Derby.
Thus far, his performance in two previous races have done nothing to make us think otherwise.
He has tallied two consecutive victories in the Santa Anita Derby and Robert B. Lewis. Both of those races were one-and-one-eighth mile.
His sire, Flower Alley, had a successful Derby trail in 2005. Ultimately he won $2.5 million in race earnings. I'll Have Another seems to be his best colt, and that could mean a strong showing at the Derby.
I believe he has the best shot at winning the Derby of all the horses with odds of 15-1 or lower.
