2012 NFL Draft Grades: Teams with Outstanding Offensive Hauls

Chris TrapassoJun 7, 2018

When I took a step back from the 2012 NFL draft and scoured every team's selections, I realized these clubs made an absolute killing on offense.

They added supreme talent at needed playmaking positions and, for the most part, did so with great value.

Cincinnati Bengals

In true Bengals form, the team was focused on prospects from big schools. Their small scouting department may be the cause of that, but frankly, over the last few years it's worked out.

Cincinnati snagged Kevin Zeitler after trading back in Round 1. Some Bengals fans were upset that the team didn't jump on Stanford guard David DeCastro when he was available.

Though Zeitler isn't as polished as DeCastro, he's an experienced guard who should flourish on the interior of Cincinnati's offensive line.

Rutgers' do-it-all wideout Mohamed Sanu was picked in the third round, and he projects as a nice chain-moving target for Andy Dalton—a guy that should alleviate pressure from A.J. Green on the outside.

Orson Charles didn't have the greatest pre-draft process, as his sloppy combine effort preceded a drunken driving arrest

However, there's no questioning his athletic talents and productivity in the SEC at Georgia

The Bengals look to be formulating a nice two-tight-end tandem of their own.

Marvin Jones was an absolute steal in Round 5.

He's got good size and has a well-rounded game. He should be the team's No. 3 at the start of the season, and don't be surprised if he outperforms Sanu.

The Bengals needed more offensive weapons for Dalton, and they got them.

The Colts are starting from scratch. What better ingredient to begin with than Andrew Luck?

After grabbing the potentially-generational talent at No. 1 overall, they were determined to surround him with talented youngsters to help aid his transition to the pro game—a transition many believe won't be that difficult in the first place.

Coby Fleener falling into their laps in Round 2 was a dream come true.

Tight ends are rookie quarterbacks' best friends. How about the QB's go-to collegiate target?

Dwayne Allen is another seam-threatening tight end with loads of upside.

Remember how much success Peyton Manning had with Brandon Stokley, the pesky slot option with sneaky quickness and athleticism?

That's exactly what T.Y. Hilton brings to the field, the team's second third-round pick.

Vick Ballard, the running back from Mississippi State, brings a punishing style to the ground game, and has feature-back promise, even if it may take a few years.

Even LaVon Brazill, the wideout from Ohio University selected in Round 6, has possession-receiver potential.

For a rebuilding organization looking to keep pace with the NFL's offensive renaissance, you can't fault the Colts for their 2012 draft.

With the Giants, I'm going with quality over quantity.

I know David Wilson is insanely athletic, but I'm not as high on him as everyone else. He seems a lot like C.J. Spiller, who hits the hole so hard and with so much speed, he doesn't allow blocks to materialize in front of him.

Learning how to run with patience will be the toughest aspect in his acclimation to the NFL.

I didn't like him as a high pick if he was to be forced into a feature-back role.

With the G-Men, he won't be.

Ahmad Bradshaw runs with a similar suddenness, and he'll coach Wilson on the nuances of the the pro game.

A perfect situation.

Rueben Randle wasn't wildly productive at LSU, but he did have Jarrett Lee and Jordan Jefferson throwing him the football last season.  He's the perfect perimeter option to incorporate into the Giants offense, which is already loaded with receiving talent.

Though fourth-round pick Brandon Mosley and sixth-round pick Matt McCants aren't instant starters, they provide great depth to a somewhat-aging offensive line, especially on the edge.
