2012 NFL Draft Grades: Draft Weekend's Biggest Losers

Vinny MessanaJun 7, 2018

The NFL draft was not a success for everyone. Whereas teams such as the Philadelphia Eagles and Cincinnati Bengals made significant improvements, there were a couple of teams who failed to receive any impact players for 2012.

Also, there were certainly players who saw their draft stock fall significantly, which will ultimately affect their careers.

Here are the four that stood out.

Oakland Raiders

After choking away the AFC West title in 2011, the Raiders really needed to improve their team, considering the Denver Broncos added a QB named Peyton Manning.

Problem is, the Raiders didn't have a first-round pick, or a second-round pick, thanks to their trade for Carson Palmer.

This will make it difficult for them to improve on their porous defense which ranked 27th in opponent passing yards per game as well as rushing yards per game.

With their first selection, in the third round, they selected an offensive lineman, who may or may not remain at the same position. Some believe he is better suited for left guard, which remains to be seen.

The Raiders really needed playmakers on defense and a running back to spell Darren McFadden, and they did not acquire top-flight prospects.

The Saints really did not have much leeway by having their first selection coming in the third round (thanks to Gregg Williams). Still, they did make some curious picks, when they should have improved their woeful passing defense which ranked 30th in the league.

They did select a safety in the fifth round, but he possesses marginal ability to stop the pass, and below average run-stopping ability.

The Saints are stacked at wide receiver yet used their fourth-round selection on WR Nick Toon, who does not figure to catch many passes in 2012.

The Saints did not have many options in the 2012 draft but did not make the best choices to benefit their team this season.

Kellen Moore, Undrafted

What's a guy got to do to be an underdog story? The NFL is very discriminatory in regards to size and strength. Kellen Moore, the owner of an FBS record 50 victories, was not even drafted this season.

Granted, the NFL is not in search of many 5'11" quarterbacks who possess little arm strength, but Kellen Moore is a proven winner who has now signed with the Detroit Lions to compete for their third-string position.

Most careers in life reward hard work, and Moore possesses tremendous work ethic, but in football he was overlooked and was not deemed worthy of even being the 253rd and final player selected.

Certainly frustrating for Moore.

Alonzo Dennard, Round 7

Dennard is a 5'10" 204-pound cornerback out of Nebraska. He has all the tools to become a terrific cornerback, but he crippled his chances of becoming an early-round pick when he decided to punch a police officer last week at a bar.

If there is any way to ruin your chances of signing a lucrative contract, that is it. And why would one punch a police officer?

Dennard ended up being drafted in the seventh round by New England, but the incident certainly puts him on thin ice with the organization.
