Tennessee Titans: Who Will Team Select in Second and Third Rounds of NFL Draft?

Zach LawJun 2, 2018

Based on their pick of Kendall Wright in the first round, the Tennessee Titans are looking to outscore opponents in 2012. In the second day of the draft, they can continue to shore up the offense with help in the interior OL, or they can work on the defense.

Most mock drafts had the Titans taking a defensive lineman or a cornerback in the first round. Either the Titans felt like Wright was a talent they'd regret passing up, or they felt that plenty of good players remained at their weak spots.

Options at Defensive End

When it was time for the Titans to pick, two players who were commonly mocked to the team were gone. Whitney Mercilus and Nick Perry went in the final 10 picks of the round.

Second-round guys are Vinny Curry (edge guy out of Marshall), Jared Crick of Nebraska (could be more of a 3-4 end or DE/DT swing guy) and Andre Branch out of Clemson.

Third-round possibilities include Cam Johnson of Virginia, a guy with two years of 4-3 end experience, Malik Jackson of Tennessee, who has played end and defensive tackle, and Jake Bequette of Arkansas, another potential 3-4 OLB.

Options at Defensive Tackle

In the past four drafts, the Titans have selected a defensive tackle in the first three rounds three times. They did well in the draft last year with run-stuffer Jurrell Casey and pass-rush specialist Karl Klug. A few guys with first-round grades like Devon Still and Jerel Worthy are still on the board, although the Titans would probably have to trade up to get either.

Players who will be available at the Titans' 52nd overall pick include Brandon Thompson of Clemson, Josh Chapman of Alabama and Mike Martin of Michigan.

Third-round guys include Alameda Ta'amu of Washington, Kendall Reyes of UConn, Billy Winn of Boise State and Marcus Forston of Miami (Florida).

Options at Cornerback

While Morris Claiborne was expected to be long gone by the time the Titans picked, and Stephon Gilmore was unlikely to get out of the 15th pick, Dre Kirkpatrick was almost always available for the Titans at the 20th pick. When the Bengals took him at No. 17, the Titans set their sights on other options.

Janoris Jenkins is still on the board. I doubt that he lasts longer than the first 10 picks of the second round. Brandon Boykin of Georgia would be a great guy to learn the craft by initially playing the nickel corner. Alfonzo Dennard of Nebraska lost some of his draft luster due to a recent arrest. He's pegged as a second-round guy and could slide.

Other second-round-worthy guys include Jayron Hosley of Virginia Tech, Leonard Johnson of Iowa State, Casey Hayward of Vanderbilt and Chase Minnifield of Virginia.

Third-round possibilities include Donnie Fletcher of Boston College, Jamell Fleming of Oklahoma and Trumaine Johnson of Montana.

Options at Interior Offensive Line

With the Titans struggling with their interior OL run blocking, it was surprising that they passed on a talent like David DeCastro in the first round. They didn't value the position enough as much as a dynamic wideout.

Second-round possibilities at guard include Kelechi Osemele of Iowa State, Amini Silatolu of Midwestern State and Brandon Washington of Miami (Florida).

In the third round, you could see the Titans select Tony Bergstrom of Utah, Senio Kelemete of Washington or Lucas Nix of Pittsburgh.

At center, Peter Konz of Wisconsin is the top guy available, and if the Ravens don't take him, he may slide all the way to the Titans' pick in the second round. Mike Brewster of Ohio State, Ben Jones of Georgia and David Molk of Michigan are three second-day possibilities to replace Eugene Amano.

Other Positions

If the Titans are planning on a 2013 without Michael Griffin, they're going to need to backfill at safety. They could look at George Iloka of Boise State, Antonio Allen of South Carolina or Markelle Martin of Oklahoma State in Friday night's portion of the draft.

Another position that will need upgrading next year is weakside linebacker. Second-round guys include Courtney Upshaw of Alabama, considered a first-round talent, Bobby Wagner of Utah State, Zach Brown of North Carolina and Lavonte David of Nebraska.

Players to consider in the third round include Ronnell Lewis of Oklahoma, Keenan Robinson of Texas, Travis Lewis of Oklahoma, and Sean Spence of Miami (Florida).

Positions that are unlikely to be targeted in Day 2 of the draft are quarterback, running back, fullback, tight end, offensive tackle and inside linebacker.
