2012 NBA Free Agents: Power Ranking Deron Williams' Potential Landing Spots
Deron Williams, the unquestioned prize of the upcoming NBA free-agent class, is not going to lack for suitors. However, there is a small list of teams with a realistic possibility of landing his elite point guard services.
Williams is clearly one of the best point guards in the league. He has the ability to dominate by dishing the ball or scoring, and he will always contribute with both.
Since his third year in the league he has not had a season where he averaged less than 8.6 assists or 18.7 points per game.
Williams can do everything a team would want a point guard to do. He will drastically change the expectations of whichever team that lands. Here are the favorites to do just that.
No. 1: Dallas Mavericks
This potential marriage has been rumored for months. Dallas did everything they could to set themselves up to have a ton of cap room this offseason, and they will certainly have enough room to add one max contract.
Adding fuel to this fire is the fact that Williams is from the Dallas area.
The Mavericks offer Williams an organization with a tremendous track record of success, and an owner whose commitment to winning he does not need to question.
They also have a forward by the name of Dirk Nowitzki that every point guard dreams of dishing to.
Mark Cuban is going to do everything in his power to make this happen, and that is something that is hard for any player to turn down.
Chance of Landing Williams: 57 percent
No. 2: Indiana Pacers
The Pacers don't get mentioned in the race for Williams often, and for the life of me I can't figure out why.
Indiana has had an impressive season. They have a solid young nucleus, and the foundation to be the most complete team in basketball. They are also in a position to be able to add a max contract this offseason.
Deron Williams will be their best option. The Pacers have had decent point guard play from Darren Collison, and George Hill has done a nice job filling in for him during a recent injury.
However, both are far from elite. Williams would be a huge boost to this lineup.
While Indiana doesn't carry the same name power or market size of Dallas, they offer Williams a fantastic and young roster. He should definitely view this as an opportunity to go for a ring.
Chance of Landing Williams: 24 percent
No. 3: New Jersey Nets
The moment Dwight Howard decided to return to Orlando next season, the Nets chances of retaining Williams shrunk.
It is no secret that D-Will wants to see that the Nets will be in a position to win before re-signing with the franchise. And their opportunity to make an impact move shrunk when D-12 went off the market.
Still, New Jersey cannot be counted completely out. They will be moving to Brooklyn, and the appeal of this market cannot be understated. Also, they will have tremendous cap flexibility, and will be able to make some roster changes.
Those changes and the market just might be enough to keep their prized point guard.
Chance of Landing Williams: 19 percent
