NFL Draft 2012: Teams That Will Defy Experts in Round 1
With all the analysis on the NFL draft now, it's easy to predict who teams like the Miami Dolphins and the St. Louis Rams will draft.
The experts have always been the source for fans and the media, with teams focusing on scouting, rather than TV personalities.
Come Thursday night, certain teams will make trades and bold moves that will blow up the draft boards.
Here are a few teams that won't go with the experts on draft day.
Although it seems like every expert, including ESPN's Todd McShay and Mel Kiper Jr. think Miami will draft Ryan Tannehill with the eighth overall pick, the Dolphins have bigger draft needs.
The Dolphins tired to pick up a quarterback in free agency when they pursued Peyton Manning and Matt Flynn.
The fact of the matter is Matt Moore is the starting quarterback for Miami, and last year he had a good second half.
After struggling in his first four games, Moore won six out of his last nine, finishing the year with a 60 percent completion rating.
That's better than Joe Flacco, Michael Vick, Andy Dalton and NFL Rookie of the Year, Cam Newton.
No, Moore is not better than those quarterbacks, but he is good young talent with a lot of promise. He showed potential and posted a respectable 87.1 quarterback rating.
That being said Tannehill is a good prospect but he is not ready to play in the NFL. The Dolphins may bring in a quarterback to compete with Moore, but Tannehill is not that quarterback, right now.
The Dolphins have needs at wide receiver, offensive line and a pass-rushing spot, so their eighth pick should be used there.
They also could trade down, grab a pick or two and build their team. Overall the Dolphins are moving forward with a great rush defense and a solid running game now lead by Reggie Bush.
Despite what the experts think Tannehill at number eight just doesn't make sense.
St. Louis Rams
Just like Tannehill, Justin Blackmon seems to be penciled in at number six, but besides filling the number one receiver spot, the Rams have some big-time needs.
The offensive line was terrible last year giving up a league-high 55 sacks. The secondary wasn't any better giving up 358 yards-per-game, good for 22nd in the league.
Injuries were one reason for the lack of success, but they could use a game changer at cornerback.
The Rams do need some firepower on offense even though Sam Bradford will be back, and Steven Jackson is coming off another 1,000 yard-season.
With Brandon Lloyd gone their receiving core is lacking a true number one target.
Blackmon is talented, but so is Michael Floyd, and he may be around later on.
If the Rams move back in the draft for Floyd, or an offensive lineman, they will be able to add a few more draft picks.
Right now Blackmon would be a great fit for the Rams, but with the team trying to rebuild once again, trading their pick may be the best choice.
Despite playing without their best offensive player in Jamaal Charles and one of their best on defense in Eric Berry the Chiefs were able to win seven games in the competitive AFC West.
That being said, they have holes they need to fill, including offensive line, defensive line and cornerback.
Right now most experts have them locked in with Luke Kuechly at No. 11. Kuechly had a great college career at Boston College, and though he would be paired with Derrick Johnson at linebacker, the Chiefs are better served grabbing a top-need player.
David DeCastro, Michael Brockers, or Fletcher Cox are picks that would help them.
If one of their prospects drop, they may even trade the pick.
It's also highly unlikely that the Chiefs will draft Tannehill even if he drops down to them. Even though he worked out with Chiefs privately on April 13th, it seems like they will go another way,
Although the Chiefs could draft the best player in Kuechly, they will probably draft for the future and go after someone like DeCastro.
