2012 NFL Draft: Should the Philadelphia Eagles Draft a Quarterback?
A lot of talk has been made about the Eagles intention to add a quarterback in the upcoming draft. Honestly, having Mike Kafka and Trent Edwards as your backups is not ideal. However, can a rookie provide you with a better option?
Of course he can, as long as his name is Andrew Luck or Robert Griffin III. Since both of them will be picked way before the Eagles will choose their first player, they are not a part of the discussion.
So, what about the rest of the quarterbacks of the 2012 draft class? Can they really make a difference for the Eagles?
Maybe some of them can do it, but it wouldn’t be wise to bet on that. Ryan Tannehill, Brandon Weeden and Brock Osweiler are regarded as the next best signal-callers, but are they really better than Kafka?
I strongly believe that Tannehill is overrated, and I’m not the only one. But that just means he is not as good as many think he is, not necessarily that he is bad. No one can tell what his development will be, but right now, he looks to me like someone from the middle of the pack.
He also seems likely to be gone by the time the Eagles pick at No. 15, with the Browns, Dolphins and Seahawks all showing keen interest in the Texas A&M prospect.
Weeden and Osweiler are more suitable options, in my opinion. I don’t expect either of them to be available in the third round of the draft. So the Eagles will have to pull the trigger in the second round if they want to add one of them.
No matter who the Eagles might miss, I think it’s a big mistake if they add a quarterback in the first two rounds. They need a lot more, and would be better suited drafting a defensive tackle, linebacker, safety, wide receiver or even a defensive end.
If I was responsible for the Eagles’ picks, I wouldn’t draft a quarterback this year. However, if Howie Roseman and Andy Reid feel like they should do it, then they should at least wait and pick their QB in the third or fourth round.
Since they’re not in search of a starter, they should aim for the middle rounds and plan to develop a quarterback with high upside, instead of reaching for an over-hyped player like Tannehill.
