NFL Draft 2012: Potential 1st-Round Picks Worth the Risk for San Francisco 49ers

Howard CowanJun 4, 2018

With the 30th pick in the NFL draft, the San Francisco 49ers will select a potential starter at guard, a wide receiver or maybe just the best defensive player available.

To carve the 49ers' first-round pick in stone almost a week before the draft would be insane, the main reason being that they don't need to add an opening-game starter.

After a playoff run and a productive offseason, the 49ers are in a position to improve their team by adding depth.

There are positions they need to address, whether it be a possible replacement for guard Adam Snyder or another wide receiver to give the offense more firepower.

That being said, they can improve their team with a very talented first-round class this year.

Here are 10 players worth their risk.

Kendall Wright, WR

1 of 10

Kendall Wright may be a pipe dream at the end of the first round, but if he gets past the Houston Texas at No. 26, then he could fall into the 49ers' lap.

With other receiver talent available, it's highly unlikely they would trade up to get him.

That being said, Wright would add some depth and explosiveness at the position.

It's still unclear what Randy Moss will bring the 49ers, so a talented receiver like Wright would bolster the position.

Cordy Glenn, G

2 of 10

For the 49ers to get Cordy Glenn, they will have to trade up in the draft, but don't be surprised if the they make a move.

The 49ers have traded up the past two seasons to secure picks, so why not a third time?

The Georgia Bulldog has been projected in the middle of the first round of many mock drafts and is ranked as the fourth-best lineman in the draft.

Right now the 49ers seem to be content to let Alex Boone and Daniel Kilgore battle for the open guard position, but come draft day if plans change, Glenn may be a good fit on the 49ers' line.

Coby Fleener, TE

3 of 10

Another tight end? Aren't the 49ers already stacked at the position with Vernon Davis and Delanie Walker?

The answer to both those questions is yes. Still, Coby Fleener could be a good pick for Jim Harbaugh and the 49ers.

There is the obvious Stanford connection, but what is more important is Fleener's talent and skill. Harbaugh likes running multiple TE sets and with the addition of Fleener, the 49ers could create mismatches in the passing game.

Everyone knows how productive Aaron Hernandez and Rob Gronkowski were for the New England Patriots, so get ready for the comparisons if Fleener comes to San Francisco.

Is Fleener the best pick for the 49ers? Probably not, but if they decided to add depth in later rounds, he may be donning the red and gold this year.

Stephen Hill, WR

4 of 10

At 6'4", Stephen Hill has great talent and potential. Add the fact he ran a 4.36 at the NFL Scouting Combine and you have a downfield threat who can make catches in traffic.

Hill may have the best "raw" talent at wide receiver, but in a run-based system at Georgia Tech, his big-play ability and stats may be inflated.

Hill would help the 49ers by adding depth in the passing game, and along with Moss, adding a threat downfield.

If he is available at No. 30, the 49ers will likely pull the trigger, considering how good he can be.

Janoris Jenkins, CB

5 of 10

The risk the 49ers would be taking if they draft Janoris Jenkins may not be whether or not he produces on the field, but rather if he continues to have problems off the field.

Jenkins' trials off the field are well documented, but his talents keep teams interested.

After the 49ers had the 16th-ranked passing defense, a talented cornerback would add depth and improve their secondary.

Taking Jenkins at No. 30 would be a surprise, but if the 49ers want first-round talent at cornerback, Jenkins should be available.

Shea McClellin, LB

6 of 10

Shea McClellin won't be this year's Aldon Smith, but if the 49ers want to add some outside linebacker talent, he may be a good fit.

After playing four years at Boise State, McClellin has shown he can get to the quarterback, recording 16.5 sacks in his final two years.

According to ESPN's Todd McShay, the 49ers may draft McClellin if they want the best defensive player available.

That being said, McClellin would see more of a backup and special-teams role, so using their first-round pick may not be the best option.

Still, McClellin would add depth to an already-strong linebacking core.

Rueben Randle, WR

7 of 10

With Kendall Wright and Stephen Hill going higher in some mock drafts and Alshon Jeffery dropping down the draft board, Rueben Randle may be a good fit for the 49ers.

Randle is the fifth-ranked wideout in the draft and looks to be a mid-second-round pick. He had a productive year for LSU last year, grabbing 53 balls for 917 yards and 8 TDs.

Though his NFL Scouting Combine 40 time was a mediocre 4.55, Randle has been scouted as having good ball skills and great hands.

He may not be the best fit for the 49ers considering they need more of a threat downfield, but if the 49ers choose to draft a receiver in the first round, Randle may be their only choice.

Kevin Zeitler, G

8 of 10

Kevin Zeitler would provide the 49ers with another guard to boost their line and would battle for a starting spot.

Zeitler is ranked second among guards by ESPN Scouts Inc., but he is shown as a second-round pick in some drafts.

The 49ers might go after Zeitler if they feel like getting top talent at guard is more important than adding depth in the late rounds.

Though he might not be the conventional pick for the team, adding support on the line would address some offensive needs.

Kendall Reyes, DE

9 of 10

With defensive ends Justin Smith and Ray McDonald playing more than 83 percent of the snaps last year, a physical player on the defensive line would help the 49ers.

If they want to address this position in the first round, then Kendall Reyes may be what the 49ers are looking for.

With their 3-4 scheme, they need someone who can take on a few blockers, allowing Patrick Willis and Navarro Bowman to roam free.

Reyes played defensive tackle at UConn and with his run-stopping ability and size, he may be a good fit for the team.

Drafting a defensive lineman in the first round doesn't tackle the 49ers' most urgent needs, but Reyes would add some youth to an aging group of players.

Peter Konz, C/G

10 of 10

Peter Konz may have played center in college, but he should be able to help out the 49ers at guard.

Lisited at 6'5" and 314 pounds, Konz has the size to play guard or backup Jonathon Goodwin at center.

Right now the Wisconsin Badger is predicted to go before the 49ers' 30th overall pick in a few mock drafts, and it's hard to see them trading up for a player like Konz.

CSN's Matt Maiocco wrote that they may be interested in an interior lineman like Konz, Although if Konz is available at No. 30, the 49ers may pull the trigger and draft him to improve the line.
