Brandon Jacobs Signing with 49ers Signals Giants Will Draft a Running Back
When Brandon Jacobs was released by the Giants earlier this month, the door was not closed on a potential reunion.
But on Wednesday, that door closed, as Jacobs agrees to a one year, $2 million contract with the San Francisco 49ers, according to Adam Schefter of ESPN.
Jacobs was unwilling to take a major paycut to stay in New York, and with his production dwindling each season since he signed a contract extension, his release was inevitable.
With Jacobs release, there was rumblings of the Giants pursuing Mike Tolbert or Michael Bush, but Tolbert signed with the Carolina Panthers and Bush with the Chicago Bears this month.
So unless Giants General Manager Jerry Reese gets a sudden urge to sign someone in the next month, they will likely be waiting until April's NFL Draft.
And given how the Giants build their roster over the past couple of seasons, that makes a lot of sense.
The Giants drafted Jacobs back in 2005 to complement Tiki Barber and be a goalline back.
The Giants drafted Ahmad Bradshaw in 2007 to complement Jacobs and Derrick Ward with Bradshaw eventually taking over the starting role.
They also drafted Da'Rel Scott last year, and could wait and see what Scott can provide.
But in all likelihood, the Giants will be drafting a running back come next month.
If Lamar Miller of Miami is available in the first two rounds, he's an option, as is Chris Polk out of Washington and David Wilson from Virginia Tech in the later rounds.
If the Panthers decided to ever drop DeAngelo Williams or Jonathan Stewart, they could be options as well.
So right now, all signs are pointing to the Giants drafting a running back next month to complement Bradshaw.
