Jeremy Lin Meeting with Infamous Headline Writer Proves His Maturity

Eric BowmanJun 7, 2018

On Tuesday, New York Knicks' star Jeremy Lin had lunch with Anthony Federico, the former ESPN employee who wrote a racial headline about Lin that resulted in him getting fired from the Worldwide leader.

The fact that Lin took time on his off day to meet the man who created such a huge firestorm in the national media shows just how grown up the 23-year-old point guard is.

Lin didn't have to ever met Federico, but he did, and that speaks volume about his character.

"It went incredible," Federico told Newsday. "I'm just so excited we had a chance to meet. We talked for an hour. I'm just so thankful."

Federico stated the two talked more about their Christian faith and Lin's health status than the controversial headline.

"We didn't talk about the headline for more than three minutes," Federico said.

Whether Federico intentionally made the "Chink in the Armor" headline is besides the point. He says it wasn't, but it happened, and ESPN had to react fast.

It was an extremely unfortunate event, but as the New York Daily News reported, Lin accepted the apology. Since he did that and has now shared an afternoon with Federico, this entire fiasco can pretty much be put to bed.

Of course, nobody should forget what happened because it's a perfect example of how you should always double check your work and think before you speak.

However, because Lin is being the most mature player in the NBA right now (how would you handle the sudden rise to fame if you were Lin?), completely moving on from this horrendous event is the best thing to do.

I could tell you how great a person Lin is, but Federico hits the nail on the head.

"

"The fact that he reached out to me," Federico said. "The fact that he took the time to meet with me in his insanely busy schedule . . . He's just a wonderful, humble person. He didn't have to do that, especially after everything had kind of died down for the most part."

"

The racially insensitive headline Federico created essentially cost him his career, but now that he's had a simple lunch with Lin, you know he has to feel a thousand times better about everything.

It's one thing to read about Lin brushing the incident off, but to be able to sit down and have a one-on-one conversation with him had to significantly lift Federico's spirits.

Put yourself in his shoes for a moment. He was embarrassed in front of the whole world, but here he is getting some closure to it all, which would certainly help me breathe easier if I were Federico.

Credit Lin for being an outstanding guy. Had this been a different person, it's tough to say if they would have met up with Federico to clear the air.

Lin did just that and in the process easily made a fan for life.

Great things happen when you step up and decide to be the better person and take the high road in rough situations.
