NBA Free Agency 2012: 5 Targets for the Cleveland Cavaliers

Maxwell OgdenJun 7, 2018

For those hoping to see a third installment of my team-specific mock drafts, I apologize; the issue is, the Cavaliers' necessary acquisitions stretch further than the NBA Draft.

With free agency approaching, the opportunity to acquire established players is equally as important.

With holes at numerous positions, it's hard to imagine the Cavaliers won't be in search of some free-agent help prior to and after their day of multiple draft picks. Fortunately for you, I'm here to break down who they might be targeting.

Carl Landry, Power Forward, UFA

1 of 5

Carl Landry would be the perfect offensive complement to the defensive-minded Tristan Thompson.

Landry is undersized at 6'9", something that might turn Cavalier fans off as they create an undersized tandem, but don't think that limits him. Landry is one of the most efficient scoring 4's in the NBA, utilizing a reliable mid-range game and an ability to score in the paint to put up points quick.

He's also one of the best at drawing fouls, something the Cavaliers could use when they play thin front lines.

While Landry isn't the best rebounder around, Thompson's ability to pull down the boards would certainly make up for that.

Season Averages: 24.2 mpg, 11.7 ppg, 4.7 rpg, 1.0 apg, 48% FG

Landry Fields, Shooting Guard, UFA

2 of 5

While many fans cry for help in the form of a pure scorer, the best possible fit at the 2 may just be Landry Fields.

Fields is a stout defender, capable of defending both guard positions and the 3. He's also shown signs of being able to shoot the three, penetrate off of his dribble and thrive in transition. While he may not be as high profile as an Eric Gordon or O.J. Mayo, he's certainly more well-rounded.

Fields is also just 23 years old and would add another young, intelligent player to a solid foundation. While the acquisition of veteran pieces remain a necessity, the young core the Cavaliers can potentially create here could rival that of the Oklahoma City Thunder.

Season Averages: 9.1 ppg, 4.4 rpg, 2.7 apg, 1.3 spg

Marcus Camby, Center, UFA

3 of 5

Just for the record, I expect the Cavaliers to take a center in the 2012 NBA Draft. If Cleveland could lock up Marcus Camby for a season, though, the improvement in the frontcourt would be exceptional.

While many will point to Camby's age, what must be acknowledged is the fact that he's still amongst the best when it comes to rebounding and shot-blocking. His season averages of 8.6 rebounds and 1.4 blocks in just 22 minutes of play are evidence of such.

While Camby isn't the healthiest player in the world, he'd certainly offer security behind Anderson Varejao. If nothing else, he'd be an excellent mentor to whomever the Cavaliers take in the second round. I suspect Vanderbilt's Festus Ezeli.

Season Averages: 22.0 mpg, 3.9 ppg, 8.6 rpg, 1.4 bpg

O.J. Mayo, Shooting Guard, RFA

4 of 5

If the Cavaliers fail to acquire Landry Fields, young scorer O.J. Mayo would be the quintessential fit. Between his jump shooting, penetrating and potential to dominate the game, Mayo would help create one of the best young backcourts in the NBA.

We all know what Kyrie Irving is capable of, just as we know how poor the play at the 2 has been for the past three years. Considering Anthony Parker's highest average since 2010 has been 8.3 points per game, there's really no debating how important the signing of Mayo would be.

If not Mayo, the Cavaliers better hope and pray for Bradley Beal...

Season averages: 26.5 mpg, 11.9 ppg, 3.3 rpg, 2.3 apg

Re-Sign Semih Erden, Center, UFA

5 of 5

While Semih Erden is far from starting material, he's a high-energy player who positively influences those around him. Between his and Tristan Thompson's active nature on the defensive end, the Cavaliers frontcourt would certainly be tough to deal with.

The biggest hurdle for the Cavaliers' ability to re-sign will be the financials. If we're honest, he's just not worth big money.

Season Averages: 3.2 ppg, 2.5 rpg, 53% FG
