College Football Recruiting 2013: Weekly Roundup and Top Commitments

Wes ODonnellMar 23, 2012

We have a busy weekend coming up in the college football recruiting world, but before the camps, combines and seven-on-sevens get underway, we need to reflect on the week that was.

A number of recruits committed, a few decommitted, some made announcements about making announcements, and some simply continued to pick up offers.

No. 1 overall recruit Robert Nkemdiche has narrowed his list to five and plans to commit after his spring game on May 18, while four-star recruit Artie Burns decided that the reigning national champion Crimson Tide are not for him...yet.

As for the kids that made their pledges public, let's take a look.

Saturday, March 17

Brendan Mahon, OL, Randolph (NJ) Randolph - Committed to Penn State

DeVeon Smith, RB, Warren (OH) Howland - Committed to Michigan

John Diarse, S, Monroe (LA) Neville - Committed to LSU

Quay Chambers, QB, Monroe (NC) Monroe - Committed to Duke

Austin Davis, OL, Mansfield (TX) Mansfield - Committed to Duke

Mahon, a Rivals four-star recruit, was the fifth player to pledge blue and white for 2013. Although small, the Nittany Lions have a solid start to the New Year.

The Michigan Wolverines, who have the complete opposite of a small class, picked up their 16th commitment of 2013 with running back DeVeon Smith.

Chambers and Davis were solid gets and were the first two players to commit to the Blue Devils this year.

John Diarse is the biggest get of this day, though. Keeping the Rivals four-star athlete in-state was a huge move by the Tigers. He's the sixth and arguably most important commitment of their 2013 class thus far.

Sunday, March 18

Scott Orndoff, TE, Pittsburgh (PA) Seton-LaSalle - Committed to Pittsburgh

The Scout three-star tight end had offers from the likes of Michigan, Michigan State, Boston College and Wisconsin.

Monday, March 19

Deon Martin, RB, Bakersfield (CA) Stockdale - Committed to California

Micah Reed, RB, Crestview (FL) Crestview - Committed to UCF

Freddie Johnson, OL, Temple (TX) Temple - Committed to SMU

Matt Barone, OL, McKees Rocks (PA) Montour - Committed to UConn

Martin, an ESPNU 150 watch-list rusher, is the second commit for the Golden Bears in 2013.

Reed, meanwhile, is the first to pledge the Knights. The Rivals three-star back was a good get for them in-state, while Johnson is the first to pledge the Mustangs.

Barone is the second commitment for the Huskies' 2013 class.

Tuesday, March 20

Deon Hollins, OLB, Missouri City (TX) Marshall - Committed to UCLA

Sadiq Olanrewaju, OT, Salisbury (CT) Salisbury - Committed to Virginia

Ray Lewis III, RB, Lake Mary (FL) Lake Mary Prep - Committed to Miami

Donnie Miles, S/RB, Suwanee (GA) North Gwinnett - Committed to UNC

Thursday was busy, and it was Ray Lewis III who made the most noise. Following in the footsteps of his father, the ESPNU 150 watch-list runner will play for the U and is the fifth to pledge this year.

UNC picked up another solid commit with Miles, a Rivals three-star athlete, and the Cavaliers got themselves a solid Rivals three-star lineman.

UCLA actually hit it big with Deon Hollins Jr., as the Rivals four-star linebacker had offers from the across the country. He's the fifth to pledge for the Bruins in the 2013 class.

Wednesday, March 21

Evrett Edwards, CB, Woodbridge (VA) Woodbridge - Committed to Duke

Brian Walker, DB, Charlotte, (NC) Mallard Creek - Committed to UNC

The two North Carolina schools both continued strong weeks with their pickups, but it is UNC who hit it biggest with Walker, a Rivals four-star DB.

Thursday, March 22

Johnny Jefferson, RB, Killeen (TX) Shoemaker - Committed to Baylor

De’Vante Scott, WR, Wesson (MS) Copiah-Lincoln (JUCO) - Committed to Mississippi State

Jefferson made quite a bit of noise this week when he decommitted from Texas A&M and quickly turned around to choose Baylor. He made his decision to commit to the Bears while at RGIII's Pro Day.

Scott's decision to commit to the Bulldogs isn't necessarily new—he committed there out of high school before going the JUCO route.

Friday, March 23

Phillip Lindsay, RB, Denver (CO) South - Committed to Colorado

Trey Washington, DB, Gilmer (TX) Gilmer - Committed to SMU

Washington is not only the second pledge to the Mustangs this week, but the second of this year. Lindsay, meanwhile, is the first to give his commitment to the Buffaloes' class of 2013.

We'll wrap up every week at Signed, Sealed, Delivered with a rundown of the all the biggest news and top commitments. Be sure to share your thoughts because we all know that some of these recruits are bound to change their minds.

You can catch me talking football and throwing seven different kinds of smoke on Twitter.
