NCAA Tournament Scores 2012: How Shocking Upsets Impact Third Round

Andrew KulhaJun 7, 2018

If you picked Norfolk State or Lehigh to pull off incredible upsets in the second round of your 2012 March Madness bracket and advance to round three, you should probably quit whatever you are doing right now and play the lottery.

For the rest of us—which I'm assuming is just about everybody—let's figure out how to approach the rest of this tournament.

Frankly, it's a mess. I highly doubt there's anybody that has an intact bracket left in the world, let alone one that is not in the garbage.

That being said, isn't that what makes March Madness so great?

You just never know what's going to happen and who will get hot at the right time.

Here's the big numbers from these two upsets and what we can expect from the potential "Cinderella" squads moving forward:

Lehigh 75, Duke 70

You'll be hard pressed to find anyone who saw this upset coming, but it will go down as one of the truly great ones. Duke is a legend in the basketball world. Lehigh, well not so much, but now they will be.

Guard C.J. McCollum led the way for the Mountain Hawks with 30 points, six rebounds and six assists, while forward Gabe Knutson added 17 points and eight rebounds.

Against a team like Duke, who boasts studs like Austin Rivers and Mason Plumlee, McCollum found a way to be the star on the court and lead his team to arguably one of the bigger upsets in tournament history.

What should we expect from Lehigh moving forward?

Their next matchup comes in round three against No. 10 seed Xavier, which is actually a very winnable game for the No. 15 seed.

They need to play the same way they did against Duke, and obviously McCollum needs to keep scoring.

Lehigh is ranked 28th in the nation in scoring at 76.2 points per game, while Xavier is 94th with 71.3. If Lehigh can keep the tempo up and the scoring high, they've got a chance to pull off two upsets in a row.

Norfolk State 86, Missouri 84

If it weren't for Duke going down, Missouri losing to the Spartans of Norfolk State would be the talk of the town.

At least we knew Duke had some flaws. Missouri on the other-hand was projected to be one of the best teams in the tournament. That goes to show you how much we really know when it comes to "March Madness."

The Spartans received incredible games from their starters—20 points from guard Pendarvis Williams, 20 points from Chris McEachin and 26 points and 14 rebounds from center Kyle O'Quinn.

If this team gets production like this in every game, they are going to be a terror. They square off with a Florida team with good perimeter guard play, but the Spartans can keep up with them.

I expect the Spartans to lean on O'Quinn down low, and I expect them to edge out the Gators.
