Lakers Trade Rumors: Chicago Bulls Must Do What it Takes to Land Pau Gasol

Timothy RappMar 14, 2012

Let's just start calling Pau Gasol "The Dwight Howard Consolation Prize" from now on, okay?

Since Howard apparently wants no part of playing in Chicago, the Bulls' front office has turned its attention to landing Pau Gasol. And they should be working their tails off to acquire him if they want to beat the Miami Heat in the playoffs this year.

The Chicago Bulls are exploring avenues to acquire Los Angeles Lakers forward Pau Gasol before Thursday's trade deadline, according to sources close to the situation.

The Bulls have long hoped to wedge themselves into the trade running for Orlando Magic star Dwight Howard, but sources told ESPN.com that Howard's well-chronicled lack of interest in a trade to Chicago has prompted the Bulls to switch their focus to Gasol in advance of Thursday's 3 p.m. deadline.

Sources say that the Lakers, however, have limited interest in the players Chicago would be offering, starting with Bulls forward Carlos Boozer.

In other words, the Bulls are going to need to make this trade a ménage à trois if they want to land Gasol. For those of you who don't speak French or are simply a very clean-living person, I'm saying they'll need to involve a third team to make this happen.

At this point, I'm not entirely sure how this will work out—I'm a writer and not a general manager for a reason. But my guess would be that the Lakers will want to land an elite player, namely a point guard, in return for Gasol.

Could we see Rajon Rondo get involved? Would a package starting with Carlos Boozer and perhaps Ramon Sessions do it if the Cavaliers got involved?

At this point, it's hard to say what it will take for the Lakers to move Gasol. But the Bulls should get as creative as possible to make this happen—a combination of Derrick Rose and Gasol would be scary.
