Printable March Madness Bracket 2012: First-Round Upsets No One Will See Coming

Adam WellsMar 12, 2012

Now that the NCAA tournament brackets have been released, it's time to start digging for those upsets.

You have been studying and analyzing this since it came out yesterday. All that is left is to print the sheets and fill them out.

Before you start putting pen to paper—or mouse to team, since we live in the computer age—there are a few things that you have to pay attention to. We know upsets will happen, it is just a matter of finding the right ones.

(In this case, the first round is when the field of 64 is set.)

No. 14 Iona over No. 3 Marquette (West Region)

Iona was one of the most controversial bubble teams to get in the tournament, but don't underestimate what this team is capable of.

The Gaels will have to win their "first round" game against BYU to play Marquette, which will be a coming out party for this team. They run the floor better than anyone in the country, and have the offensive versatility to compete with the best teams in the country.

The Golden Eagles had a good regular season in the Big East, but they didn't beat anyone. Their three best wins were over Wisconsin, Georgetown and Louisville. That's hardly a murderer's row of great competition.

Iona will spread the Marquette defense, which will open the high-flying offense up to get a lot of easy baskets.

No. 14 St. Bonaventure over No. 3 Florida State (East Region)

Florida State is riding a wave of momentum after knocking off Duke and North Carolina in the ACC tournament. The offense showed up to play early, which has been the Achilles' heel for the Seminoles this year. The defense did its job late to hold off two late-game rallies.

The Bonnies saved their season with three wins in three days during the A-10 tournament, and they matchup well with Florida State, because both teams play a similar style.

Neither one is going to overwhelm you on offense. Defensively, they are always making plays and contesting shots.

The Seminoles are more athletic, but in a one-game scenario anything can happen. Plus, the Bonnies are stronger on offense, and will be able to overcome any defensive lapses they might have.

No. 10 Purdue over No. 7 Saint Mary's (Midwest Region)

Even though it is not a huge upset from a seeding perspective, Purdue defeating Saint Mary's would be a big one. It's going to happen too.

Despite a mediocre run through the Big Ten regular season, and quick exit from the conference tournament, the Boilermakers are going to give Saint Mary's problems because of their guard play and ability to shoot the ball from beyond the arc.

Saint Mary's does not have one win over a major conference opponent this season. The 27 victories looks great on paper, but it doesn't mean anything if the opposition isn't up to snuff.
